Colin Currie

Simon Crawford-Phillips, Philip Moore piano, Colin Currie, Sam Walton, Adrian Spillett, Owen Gunnell – slagwerk

Programma:
Terry Riley delen uit Heavens Ladder 5
George Crumb Music for a Summer Evening (uit Makrokosmos III)
Steve Reich Music for Pieces of Wood
Steve Reich Quartet

Hypnotic rhythms and trance-inducing melodies

Now who does nót like Minimal Music, with its minimal, repetitive motifs; its cleverly shifting rhythmic patterns and slow structures?
There will be a new World Minimal Music Festival in Muziekgebouw aan het IJ and the Bimhuis.
5 days dedicated to minimal music: Wednesday 8 – Sunday, April 12th, 2015.
Special guest this year is Terry Riley, one of the original minimalists. The festival offers a wide and varied program with minimal music of different generations from many parts of the world. At the Bimhuis two minimal performances during this WMMF: the Necks on April 10 and Colin Currie Group on April 11.

COLIN CURRIE Group

The Scottish percussionist Colin Currie (1976) is recognized as a great musician who performs contemporary work at the highest level. His own Colin Currie Group was set up specifically to perform a composition of minimal music pioneer Steve Reich.
During the festival this percussion ensemble plays Quartet, a new piece by Reich from 2014, alongside music by Terry Riley and George Crumb. The monumental Music for a Summer Evening (Makrokosmos III) by George Crumb paints an idyllic summer night where only birds and insects break the almost palpable silence, already threatened by a hellish storm in the distance.
Opposite this dream music is Reich’s bright Music for Pieces of Wood, with layered rhythms that bounce sharply through space, and parts of Riley’s The Heavens Ladder, Book 5.

Minimal music as a term was used in contemporary classical music from about 1970. Typically, in the initial period of minimal music were Repetition (short musical phrases, with subtle variations) or Stagnation (often in the form of long sustained tones). Further particularly consonant sounds (no dissonance) and a clear tempo. Big names are Steve Reich, Terry Riley and Philip Glass. Ambient  became a sort of sequel later on. Currie’s dynamic percussion ensemble got critical acclaim time after time, particularly for performing work Steve Reich. In 2013, the group made its European debut at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Currie has premiered works by a great composers such as Elliott Carter, Dave Maric, Julia Wolfe, Steve Reich and Louis Andriessen.
