Philipp Rüttgers: Twists Of Hans Christian Andersen’s Untaped Fairy Tales

Kort samengevat: jazz & klassiek, sterke vocals.

ENGLISH
A triple blog about upcoming concerts by Dutch jazz musicians.

Philipp Rüttgers: Twists Of Hans Christian Andersen’s Untaped Fairy Tales

In short: jazz & classical, strong vocals. Narrative intelligent compositions: dreamy or heavy groove, sometimes with broken beat. Well done by a strong line up. And it has a real topic.

“Pianist, composer and band leader Philipp Rüttgers feels that he belongs to”generation Y”, living in a world full of problems, frustrations and uncertainties (the gap between rich and poor, the environment and so on). On the other hand, there are fortunately also beautiful things like empathy and joy of life. He wants to do something with this in his music: he tries to express emotions that control the daily world ”, I wrote about him in an older blog.

In 2018 he received the composition assignment from the North Sea Jazz Festival. He created a project with a critical eye on our current society from the perspective of a fairy tale. The stories of Hans Christian Andersen, the writer of fairy tales such as ‘The ugly duckling’, ‘The Chinese nightingale’, ‘The snow queen’ and” The Flying Suitcase. Recurring core elements in Andersen’s stories are the spiritual quests for “being human”, the threatening Evil, the desire for social growth and the acceptance of fate.

Heidi Heidelberg from England is a vocalist with enormous control; she sings extremely precise and nuanced, very beautiful! Other musicians are viola player Oene van Geel, cellist Jörg Brinkmann and drummer Mark Schilders, all three strong in subtle and powerful playing.

Philipp grew up in Berlin in the 1980s during the heyday of the squatters scene, punk diva Nina Hagen, the Chernobyl disaster as a real threat, and of course The Wall.

Jasper Blom: POLYPHONY, double live CD from the Jasper Blom Quartet

In short: thoughtful, intelligent and catchy compositions. Very well performed by a tight quartet and two different virtuoso guest soloists, who blend beautifully into the Blom quartet.

POLYPHONY is the most recent double live CD of the Jasper Blom Quartet, which still consists of the same 4 internationally renowned Dutch jazz musicians who have been playing together for more than 20 years. Jasper Blom – tenor sax, Jesse van Ruller – guitar, Frans van der Hoeven – double bass, Martijn Vink – drums.Jasper successively invited two guest musicians, who played a series of concerts, and not the least indeed: the virtuoso German trombonist Nils Wogram and the Belgian trumpet player Bert Joris. Both musicians that fit surprisingly well in concept, playing and the sound of the Blom quartet.
The CD was recorded in two sessions, one in 2016 with Bert Joris and one in 2018 with Nils Wogram. The compositions of Jasper Blom are – as always – well thought out and accessible.

Jeroen van Vliet / Mete Erker, CD Pluis
In short: calmness and control; lyrical but not one note too many; subtle in sound and interplay. Creative improvisations and poetic beauty.

This year (2019) pianist Jeroen van Vliet and saxophonist Mete Erker are playing together for 30 years! In a wide range of musical environments: from a linear jazz quartet in ’89, collaborations with South African trumpet player Feya Faku, to a program for church organ, reeds and modern dance in 2008. Both are also members of the innovative improvising quartet Estafest. As a duo they recorded an album in 2004: Unseen Land. Impressionist music inspired by the work of the Dutch painter Mattie Schilders.
They know each other and each other’s playing through and through. This is reflected in the new duo album released in April this year with new compositions, creative improvisations and poetic beauty. Calmness and control; lyrical but not one note too many, subtle in sound and interplay.

Jeroen has an acoustic and an electric side. He was always known as being a poetic pianist, for whom the warm sound remains important, but in the meantime a growing electronic world has been added to his work. Sometimes subtle, but sometimes more intense. With the OGU trio he plays jazz ambience and free impro. With the Moon Trio he uses electronic effects on both the piano and the bass. With Estafest it’s about room jazz & impro. With Gatecrash it is electric groove on fender rhodes.

Mete Erker also plays a.o. with his own Trio; Estafest; in the Artvark Saxophone Quartet and in Corrie van Binsbergen Playstation.
