Cross-linx festival 2017

2-3 Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, 3-3 Oosterpoort Groningen, 4-3 De Doelen Rotterdam, 5-3 Muziekgebouw/Bimhuis Amsterdam.

My Brightest Diamond

DM Stith, Shara Worden, Padma Newsome & Unremembered Orchestra

ENGLISH

The out-of-the-box thinking Cross-Linx Festival (since 2001) makes new and unexpected connections between composed new music and artists of the avant-garde pop scene very successfully. In this blog a few highlights of this years edition in March.
Cross-linx festival takes place at four locations in the Netherlands, with the same program all four days.
2-3 Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, 3-3 Oosterpoort Groningen 4-3 De Doelen in Rotterdam, 5-3 Muziekgebouw / Bimhuis Amsterdam.

Headliners are the Norwegian singer-songwriter Ane Brun (together with Zapp4), Efterklang, Hauschka, My Brightest Diamond, Sarah Kirkland Snider’s Unremembered song cycle with singer-songwriters DM Stith, Shara Nova and Padma Newsome.
Other acts are the Dutch group VanDryver and South Africa (solo) bassist James Oesi, the surreal fanfare Molino, pianist Matteo Mijderwijk, neo-classical electronic duo Perforator, guitarist Bram Stadhouders and indie-classical ensemble Jerboah.
Mijderwijk, Perforator and Jerboah will play at the Music Mining sessions: the backstage program where visitors can experience the artists from very close. Outside the halls Molino will play in the hall at the Central Station. Bram Stadhouders plays at the entrance of the hall, with the world’s largest transportable organ Victory (10 x 4 meters!) Also using his guitar and laptop.

Ane Brun and Zapp4
The popular Norwegian singer-songwriter Ane Brun will perform together with Hollands most adventurous string quartet, Zapp4. Her songs are arranged by Zapp4 especially for this occasion. Zapp4 has a reputation for doing special projects (playing the music of Radiohead and Nirvana) and did many collaborations with other musicians, ao with the Norwegian producer Jan Bang.

Shara Worden
Shara Worden is best known as a singer and frontwoman of My Brightest Diamond. Her songs and sound collages can be small and intimate, and maniacally and exalted the next moment. At Cross-Linx Shara Worden plays with My Brightest Diamond, but she can also be heard in the Unremembered project.

My Brightest Diamond
The classically trained Shara Worden rages on. It’s impossible to stick any labels on her music; with the greatest ease the singer switches from opera to a marching band, from intimate singer-songwriter songs to great indie compositions. The next album of the band is coming up and it certainly will be an innovative work that bridges gaps between numerous genres.

DM Stith, Shara Worden, Padma Newsome & Unremembered Orchestra
After her enchanting debut ‘Penelope’ the American composer Sarah Kirkland Snider is back with a new project: Unremembered, inspired by the poems and illustrations of Nathaniel Bellows. A song cycle that tells of a child’s life in rural Massachusetts. The underlying fear and lurking spirits from the poems of Bellows are undeniably present in the enchanting pieces of Kirkland. With singers DM Stith, Padma Newsome and Shara Worden.

Hauschka
German pianist Hauschka plays on his with pingpong balls, erasers and bottle caps prepared piano and creates a unique percussive sound. Compositions that combine the best of classical piano music with contemporary electronics.

Perforator

Contemporary electronic music by Marlies of Gangelen (oboe) and Akim Moiseenkov (electronics, joystick). In their imaginative compositions, the joystick is used for improvising, adaptating the oboe sounds and lines, also using a number of programmed sounds. The classically trained oboist Van Gangelen worked with Kyteman, Nils Frahm, Julia Holter and Damon Albarn. The theatrical keyboardist, singer and electronics wizard Moiseenkov sometimes seems to come from another planet, but as a duo they are very creative and persuasive.

Molino
Molino describes itself as a surreal fanfare, but it’s more than that. The music of the Netherlands-based international septet has influences from jazz, electronic music, avant-garde, Britpop, folklore and composed music. At Cross-linx Molino makes a guerrilla action in the central stations!

Bram Stadhouders
Recently guitarist Bram Stadhouders spoke at a TEDx talk about improvising in music.
What he said was that his preparation for a concert is mainly to be unprepared. Not this time at Cross-linx because Stadhouders, who began his career playing classical music, brings a special guest: Victory, the world’s largest transportable organ. For the occasion, Stadhouders wrote a new piece, which will be heard. Next to the organ Stadhouders uses his guitar and laptop and he will not perform on stage, but at the entrance to the halls!
