Inventief & creatief op geprepareerde piano
Componist John Cage was voor veel pianisten een leermeester en inspirator als het gaat om het spelen op een geprepareerde piano. Pianisten als Eve Risser, Benoit Delbecq en in Nederland Albert van Veenendaal en (in de hedendaagse muziek) Nora Mulder zijn er heel goed in geworden.
De Franse Eve Risser is ook een ster aan dit firmament.
Ze is jazz en improvisatie musicus, componist en arrangeur. Ze speelt voornamelijk piano en geprepareerde piano, maar ook klavecimbel en andere instrumenten.
Ze had als kind pianolessen en zag op 11-jarige leeftijd voor het eerst een grafische notatie. Dat prikkelde haar verbeelding, maar haar toenmalige leraar vond het maar niks.
Risser studeerde vervolgens vier jaar in Straatsburg, speelde jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek op piano en hedendaagse muziek op fluit. Ze besloot zich uiteindelijk te concentreren op de piano alleen.
”Toen ik stopte met fluit spelen voelde ik me zo beperkt in mijn improvisaties met klankkleuren dat ik de binnenkant van de piano begon te verkennen om trompetten, percussie en saxofoons te imiteren […] “ En zo werd ze een pianist die graag de piano prepareert.
Zoals gebruikelijk bij het fenomeen ‘geprepareerde piano’ worden er technieken en gereedschappen gebruikt, die de piano transformeren tot een instrument met nieuwe geluiden, onverwachte klanken en timbres.
Een recensent beschreef haar spel op het 2012 trio-album En Corps als zijnde “allesbehalve conventioneel, heel percussief, vol gedempte snaren, uitgebreide technieken en herhalende zinnen”.
Niet lang geleden bracht Risser een solo album uit Des Pas sur la Neige (Clean Feed)
Maar Des Pas sur la Neige is ook een prelude voor piano van Claude Debussy
Eve Risser groeide op in de Elzas en woont en werkt in Parijs.
Ze speelt soloconcerten op piano of elektrisch klavecimbel met haar eigen improvisaties of composities. Ze leidt The White Desert Orchestra en co-leidt, speelt en componeert in de Donkey Monkey met Yuko Oshima; in het kwartet The New Songs met de Zweedse zangeres en componiste Sofia Jernberg, Kim Myhr en David Stackenäs; in het trio EN-CORPS (Risser / Duboc / Perraud) en vele anderen.
Risser speelt solo, in trio ( En Corps); in duo met rietblazer Antonin-trio Hoang en met een groter ensemble White Desert Orchestra
Ook heeft ze op dit moment een piano-duo met pianiste Kaja Draksler.
Eve speelde/speelt met bekende musici uit de impro-scene zoals John Hollenbeck, Billy Hart, Benoît Delbecq, Jon Irabagon, Mickael Formanek, Marc Ducret, MAGMA, Magnetic Ensemble, The Bridge # 5, Pascal Niggenkemper Vision 7 en vele anderen.
In juni 2008 behaalde ze de 1e prijs voor piano in jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek aan het Nationaal Conservatorium in Parijs.
Ze was van 2009 tot 2013 pianist in het Orchestre National de Jazz.

Innovative and creative on prepared piano.
Composer John Cage was a teacher and inspirator for many pianists when it comes to playing on a prepared piano. Pianists like Eve Risser, Benoit Delbecq and in the Netherlands Albert van Veenendaal and (in contemporary music) Nora Mulder have become very good at it.
The French Eve Risser is also a star on this firmament.
She is jazz and improvisation musician, composer and arranger. She mainly plays piano and prepared piano, but also harpsichord and other instruments.
She had piano lessons as a child and at the age of 11 she saw a graphic notation for the first time. That stimulated her imagination, but her teacher didn’t want to have anything to do with it….
Risser then studied in Strasbourg for four years, playing jazz and improvised music on piano and contemporary music on flute. She finally decided to concentrate on the piano alone. “When I stopped playing flute I felt so limited in my improvisations with timbres that I started exploring the inside of the piano to imitate trumpets, percussion and saxophones […]” And so she became a pianist who liked the piano.
As is customary with the ‘prepared piano’ phenomenon, different techniques and tools are used that transform the piano into an instrument with new and unexpected sounds and timbres.
A reviewer described her play on the 2012 trio album En Corps as being “anything but conventional, very percussive, full of muted strings, extensive techniques and repetitive sentences”.

Eve Risser grew up in Alsace and lives and works in Paris.
She plays solo concerts on piano or electric harpsichord with her own improvisations or compositions. She leads The White Desert Orchestra and co-leads, plays and composes in the Donkey Monkey with Yuko Oshima; in the quartet The New Songs with the Swedish singer and composer Sofia Jernberg, Kim Myhr and David Stackenäs; in the EN-CORPS trio (Risser / Duboc / Perraud) and many others.
Risser plays solo, in trio (En Corps); in duo with reed player Antonin-trio Hoang and with a large rensemble White Desert Orchestra At the moment she also has a piano duo with pianist Kaja Draksler.
Eve played/plays with renowed improv musicians such as John Hollenbeck, Billy Hart, Benoît Delbecq, Jon Irabagon, Mickael Formanek, Marc Ducret, MAGMA, Magnetic Ensemble, The Bridge # 5, Pascal Niggenkemper Vision 7 and many others.
In June 2008 she won the 1st prize for piano in jazz and improvised music at the National Conservatory in Paris. She was a pianist at the Orchester National de Jazz from 2009 to 2013.
