CD Never Odd Or Even (Driff records)
Spannende geluiden, ritmes en klanklandschappen
Jorrit Dijkstra – alto saxophone, lyricon, analog synthesizer, effect pedals

Cd DASH!Off van DASH!
Free funk

ENGLISH

Three new CDs, again with more than one track to listen to! Exciting electronic sounds on the 2nd solo CD of Jorrit Dijkstra; thoughtful improvisations on the first duo-album of Rutger van Otterloo & Albert van Veenendaal; and new free funk with DASH!

CD Never Odd Or Even (Driff records)
Jorrit Dijkstra – alto saxophone, lyricon, analog synthesizer, effect pedals

On the 2nd solo CD Never Odd Or Even saxophonist Jorrit Dijkstra continues the search for new possibilities of electronic improvisation on his sax.
Since the late 90’s he’s looking for ways to expand the saxophone sound using effects pedals and the Lyricon, analog wind synthesizer from the 70-ies. He then asks himself questions like: can I make l the synth sound acoustic and the saxophone sound electronic? The somewhat uncontrollable analog electronics provide him with a framework for improvisations. The result is a whole series of exciting sounds, rhythms and soundscapes, in a quest that comes about by improvising.

He says it like this:
This is my second album of solo work. Many of these tracks were overdubbed, taking inspiration from Julius Hemphill’s seminal album Blue Boyé. I improvised the first layer and, without listening back, immediately improvised second and sometimes third layers on top – giving the impression that multiple musicians with 100% compatible improvisational minds are interacting. Other tracks I recorded in one take, using a loop machine or delay patch in my modular synthesizer as a form of live overdubbing. I have tried to form textural connections between the electronics and the acoustic sounds: can I make the synth sound acoustic and the saxophone sound electronic? By pushing my saxophone sound into extremes with the electronic processors, exploiting the Lyricon’s extraordinary possibilities of control, and using very direct recording and mixing techniques, I have tried to create an intimate sonic experience where every detail holds meaning.

Reed player Jorrit Dijkstra lives in Boston for a long time now and has built a new career as a hornplayer in the jazz and improv scene. He often collaborates with musicians from Chicago and Boston. But he still plays regularly in the Netherlands, with musicians from here.
Besides alto and soprano saxophone he plays the electronic wind instrument Lyricon and analog electronics, and he composed for ensembles as Tetzepi, David Kweksilber Big Band and the Amstel Quartet. He is active as a bandleader, composer and as a teacher, both in Boston and in the Netherlands. A few of his ensembles: THE WHAMMIES, engaged in playing the music of soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy; The Flatlands Collective (with musicians from Chicago); Pillow Circles, a project for which he received a composition commissioned by the North Sea Jazz festival in 2009. Furthermore, a duo with percussionist John Hollenbeck, the two musicians especially zooming into details in the sound of their instruments, using analog electronics. And Sound-Lee, a Dutch quartet that plays the music of Lee Konitz.
Driff Records is the record label he founded in 2012 together with pianist Pandelis Karayorgis. Because freer forms of improvisation are never easy to have released at existing major record labels, many musicians nowadys release their music independently.

CD No Trace (brokkenrecords) of Albert van Veenendaal – piano and Rutger van Otterloo – soprano, baritone and C melody saxophone.
Everything is possible, nothing is obligatory, no limits.
Duo Rutger van Otterloo & Albert van Veenendaal plays on the borderline of improvised and contemporary music. The atmosphere of the music varies: sometimes dreamy and evocative, sometimes rhythmic and groovy, always with improvisations. It’s eclectic, and within that it’s contemplative and communicative.
Albert van Veenendaal wrote all compositions. The titles of the pieces are derived from an (on the CD cover) attached playful story by Toon Tellegen, the content is synchronized to the titles of the album.
The duo will perform on 27-12 at Bimhuis, Amsterdam during Brokken Festival.
The musicians have known each other very long, but did not play in duo context before.
Rutger van Otterloo plays all saxophones in ensembles like Cram, Duo Koleva/van Otterloo, Fra Fra Big Band, David Kweksilber Big Band. Van Otterloo used to play orchestra De Volharding.
albert v vPianist Albert van Veenendaal calls himself a ‘visual musician “because of the epic and cinematic character of his music. Improvisation and composition go together seamlessly. He plays a lot of prepared piano, and plays both solo and in many different groups, het Wisselend Toon Quintet and also ensemble Playstation of Corrie van Binsbergen. He also composes and plays with theater and dancecompanies.Van Veenendaal teaches at the Conservatory of Utrecht.
