Oslo Jazz Orchestra

Jazz leeft in Noorwegen! Noorse musici zijn goed in het beeldend vertellen van verhalen, met de spreekwoordelijke Scandinavische rust en ruimtelijkheid. Vaak is het open en ambient muziek; nu jazz. Maar niet altijd. Ook met experimentele impro, avant-rock en electronica doen ze het goed.
Al lange tijd bovendien: in 2016 bestaat het Oslo Jazz Festival dertig jaar, en om dat te vieren heeft dit prestigieuze festival de top van de Noorse jazzscene samengebracht voor het project Oslo 5. Deze supergroep bestaat uit ervaren, gearriveerde musici en veelbelovende nieuwe namen. Alle musici hebben ieder voor zich een uitstekende reputatie opgebouwd in de internationale jazz.

Mathias Eick (36) speelt verschillende instrumenten, maar vooral trompet. Hij speelt o.a. in Jaga Jazzist, het orkest waar ‘Avantgarde meets Toegankelijk’, met nu-jazz, experimentele rock en electronica. Verder speelt hij met Motif, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, Lars Danielsson en Manu Katché. Hij bracht inmiddels drie prachtige CD’s uit op ECM Records.

Saxofonist Trygve Seim (44) heeft een indrukwekkende carrière opgebouwd als onderscheidend musicus en componist. Hij leidt zijn eigen projecten, maar participeert ook in veel samenwerkingen. Ook Seim bracht werk uit op ECM. Hij is verder is lid van The Source en speelt met Jacob Young en Sinikka Langeland.
In de  video laat hij zijn gebogen sopraansax klinken als een armeense duduk.

Pianist/toetsenist en componist Jon Balke (60) is de nestor van de band. Balke is deels klassiek geschoold, deels jazz geschoold. Hij maakte aan het eind van de jaren 70 ook etnische muziek. Later speelde hij dan weer met allerlei mensen uit de freejazz. Misschien komt het daardoor dat hij heel goed geworden is in de combinatie van Oosters-Westers, akoestisch-elektrisch en gecomponeerd-geïmproviseerd. Hij maakte hele mooie platen voor het prestigieuze ECM label, onder meer met zijn wereldmuziekproject Siwan en zijn Magnetic North Orchestra.

Ellen Andrea Wang (29) is bassist en zangeres, en de jongste op het podium. Ze won de Oslo Jazz Festival Talent Award in 2012 en maakte indruk met haar soloalbum Diving (2014) en als frontvrouw van de band Pixel. Ze wordt steeds vaker gevraagd om mee te doen in andermans projecten, zoals afgelopen zomer bij Manu Katché. 
Ellen Andrea Wang zingt en speelt eveneens in het voorprogramma met haar band Pixel, een jonge band die liefde voor pop en indie-rock combineert met flexibele jazz-arrangementen.

Drummer Gard Nilssen (32) hoort bij de jonge ambitieuze lichting Noorse jazzmusici. Hij speelt onder andere in bands als Bushman’s Revenge, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra en Cortex. Ook leidt hij zijn eigen groep Acoustic Unity.

Jazz is alive in Norway!

Norwegian musicians excel in expressive storytelling, with the famous Scandinavian tranquility and spaciousness. Often it is open and ambient music; nu jazz. But not always. They also do well in experimental improvisation, avant-rock and electronica.

For a long time, moreover: in 2016 the Oslo Jazz Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary, and because of that the prestigious festival brings togehter the top of the Norwegian jazz scene for the project Oslo 5. This super group consists of experienced, arrived musicians and promising new names. All musicians have earned theri own excellent reputation in international jazz.

Mathias Eick (36) is a multi-instrumentalist, but mainly plays the trumpet. He plays ao in Jaga Jazzist, the orchestra  where ‘Avantgarde meets Accessible’, with nu-jazz, experimental rock and electronica. He also plays with Motif, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, Lars Danielsson and Manu Katché. He has released three beuatiful CD’s on ECM Records.

Saxophonist Trygve Seim (44) has an impressive career as a distinctive musician and composer. He leads his own projects, but also participates in many collaborations. Seim also released work on ECM. He is also a member of The Source and plays with Jacob Young and Sinikka Langeland.

Pianist/keyboardist and composer Jon Balke (60) is the nestor of the band. Balke is partly classically educted, partially jazz trained. In the late 70’s he also made ethnic music. Later on he played with free jazz musician. Maybe it’s because of this that he became very good at combining Asian, Southwestern, acoustic-electric-composed and improvised music. He made beautiful albums for ECM, including his world music project Siwan and Magnetic North Orchestra.

Ellen Andrea Wang (29) is bassist and singer, and the youngest on the stage. She won the Oslo Jazz Festival Talent Award in 2012 and made a big impression with her solo album Diving (2014) and as front woman of the band Pixel. More and more she gets asked to get involved in other people’s projects, like last summer by Manu Katché. Ellen Andrea Wang also sings and plays with her band Pixel, a young band that combines love for pop and indie rock with flexible jazz arrangements.
