Jazz met een beetje weemoed
Het Northsea Jazz Festival 2014 vindt plaats op 11, 12 en 13 juli in Ahoy, Rotterdam. In aanloop daar naar toe is er een serie blogs gewijd aan verschillende artiesten die dit jaar op NSJ spelen. De keuze van de bands & musici in deze serie blogs is zuiver ingegeven door persoonlijke interesse en nieuwsgierigheid.
Toots Thielemans is onlangs gestopt met spelen vanwege zijn hoge leeftijd, maar wij hebben Hermine Deurloo! Ze begon op altsax, maar na haar studie aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam leerde Hermine Deurloo zichzelf de chromatische mondharmonica te bespelen. Geïnspireerd door Toots Thielemans ontwikkelde ze een intiem en lyrisch geluid. Inmiddels treedt ze in de voetsporen van haar grote voorbeeld. Internationaal bekend is ze inmiddels ook.
Deurloo stond eerder op het North Sea Jazz Festival met andere projecten, maar op vrijdag 11 juli komt ze voor het eerst met haar eigen kwartet (Volga 17:15).
Hun cd Gold Fish (2012) werd heel goed ontvangen. Jesse van Ruller (guitar); Hermine Deurloo (Chromatic Harmonica); Tony Overwater (bass); Joshua Samson (percussion, hang, morsing). Het quartet speelt eigen stukken. En zoals dat al snel gaat met jazz en mondharmonica: een beetje melancholie klinkt er altijd wel in door. Maar Deurloo kiest ook meestal echt voor de meer mooie en lyrische jazz, en niet zozeer voor uptempo bebop of harde funk.

Hiernaast heeft ze een duo met pianist Rembrandt Frerichs, en ook speelt ze met het East Park String Quartet, met een repertoire dat ze speciaal voor die bezetting schreef.
Deurloo is een veelgevraagd gastsolist, ze speelde en speelt onder meer met het Willem Breuker Kollektief, gitarist Tony Scherr (Bill Frisell, Norah Jones), het Metropole Orkest, Han Bennink, Corrie van Binsbergen en Rembrandt Frerichs. Daarnaast is ze te horen in menige filmsoundtrack en commercial.

Toots Thielemans recently stopped playing because of his age, but we still have Hermine Deurloo !
She started on alto saxophone, but after her studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam Hermine Deurloo taught herself to play the chromatic harmonica. Inspired by Toots Thielemans she developed an intimate and lyrical sound. Now she follows in the footsteps of her idol. She is now also internationally known.
Deurloo played at the North Sea Jazz Festival with other projects before, but this year she brings her own quartet for the first time. Their CD Goldfish (2012) was very well received

And as it tends to go with jazz & harmonica: a little melancholy is always in there.
