Swing & abstractie

Ziv Taubenfeld improviseert heel speels.

Swing & abstraction

Ziv Taubenfeld improvises in a very playful way. He uses his bass clarinet as a somewhat lighthearted instrument, without avoiding the deep sound of it. With him everything sounds easy and clear.
On September 28 this adventurous bass clarinettist/composer gets Carte Blanche to fill an concert at the Bimhuis. He will do so with his acoustic trio BONES and the band PLOTS, with renowed Dutch jazz musicians. Bimhuis regularly gives carte blanche to performers with a penchant for improvisation. This time it is the turn of Ziv Taubenfeld. Musicians like Oene van Geel, Bram Stadhouders, Harmen Fraanje, Ava Mendoza, Alexander Hawkins and Hamid Drake preceded him.

Early this year Ziv Taubenfeld made a big impression with the debut of the acoustic trio Bones (Leo Records, a label that defines itself as Music for the Inquiring Mind and the Passionate Heart).
For Bones he composes clear, transparent music where swing and abstraction overlap. With an line-up of bass clarinet, double bass and drums there is plenty of space in the music, and a lot of dynamic range and contrast. The album was recorded in an intimate living room during a Dutch tour. In Bones Ziv plays with childhood friends from his native Israel Shay Hazan – bass, Nir Sabag – drums
Next to Bones he presents PLOTS, a band with famous Dutch jazz musicians. PLOTS improvises in a song-like manner. With Ziv Taubenfeld – bass clarinet, Joost Buis – trombone, Frank van Bommel – piano, Wim Janssen – drums, Kurt Rosenwinkel – guitar, Dario Deidda – bass, Gregory Hutchinson – drums

Ziv Taubenfeld was trained as a classical clarinetist in Karmiel, Israel, where he became fascinated by the deep timbre of the bass clarinet. In the Netherlands he studied with Michael Moore at the Conservatory in Groningen and later became active in the Amsterdam jazz and improvisation scene. In 2013 he won the Northern European Jazz Talent Contest in Groningen. He was the best of six finalists from conservatories in Germany, Denmark, Russia, Estonia, Sweden and Groningen.
