Brad Mehldau

Brad Mehldau blijft verbazen

The Art of the Trio.

In

The Art of the Trio (Warner Bros).

What makes Brad Mehldau so special? Mehldau’s musical personality is twofold: he is first and foremost an improviser and passionate lover of the surprise and wonder that can occur from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly, in real time. But he also has a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music, which gives form to everything he plays.

While playing, he listens to how the ingredients of a musical piece can be unraveled, and in what order they occur. He feels the story in each melody. It’s like he deconstructs a piece of music as it were, to subsequently reassemble it into a new version.
The two sides of Mehldau’s personality – the improviser and the formalist – he puts next or maybe opposite each other. The effect is a kind of controlled chaos.
If you manage to follow  the turns he takes with the musical components of a piece, then you can get carried away by the magic of it.
That’s why Brad Mehldau continues to amaze the world of jazz.
