Creatieve electro-ambient.

Album Evergreens van Plug and Pray
Benoît Delbecq: piano, keyboards and electronics
Jozef Dumoulin: Fender Rhodes

Album EVERGREENS by PLUG AND PRAY

Benoît Delbecq: piano, keyboards and electronics
Joseph Dumoulin: Fender Rhodes

Benoît Delbecq and Joseph Dumoulin are two contemporary jazz pianists; tireless inventive musicians, both of which are always experimenting and improvising with new ideas.
Their duo is called Plug and Pray, the albumtitle is Evergreens, the music consists of acoustic and electronic sounds, beats and minimal themes. Electro-ambient on prepared keys and power equipment. Improvised music that does not really fit within conventional limits.

Plug – because there’s a lot of electro involved; Pray – because they pray/hope their music exceeds the complexity of the equipment. Ultimately, it is all about the music-of-the-moment in which the preparations on the piano and the equipment are used as “accidental discoveries” as it were.

The duo will perform on August 3 at Jazz Festival in Middelheim (Belgium)

Jozef Dumoulin is a prominently known in the free improv music-scene in Belgium, but has lived in Paris since 2006. In the press he has often been described as “piano wizard”, “keyboard magician” and “Fender Rhodes specialist”. He makes a unique sound on Fender Rhodes, which he often combines with electronics.
In fact, he has redefined the Fender Rhodes in a contemporary, eclectic and personal way. He was the first to bring a full solo program with the instrument.

Dumoulin never was very into Funk and Psychedelic rock music, where the F-Rh was widely used. He focused on the (guitar and electro) possibilities that the instrument had to offer. He placed 4 restrictions on his solo project: using only the F-Rh; improv only, no composed material; use tracks with a regular length and no use of overdubs. As for sound effects, there were no constrictions.

He keeps his own personal sound in any musical context, whether it’s traditional jazz, improvised music, pop or contemporary music. He leads ao The Red Hill Orchestra (with saxophonist Ellery Eskelin and drummer Dan Weiss), his own trio with Trevor Dunn and Eric Thielemans. Furthermore he plays in Warped Dreamer with drummer Teun Verbruggen and trumpeter Arve Henriksen.
He studied with John Taylor, and played with many, including Magik Malik, Zapp4, Toots Thielemans, Michael Brecker, Marc Ducret, Mark Turner, Teun Verbruggen.

Blog about Warped Dreamer

The French pianist Benoit Delbecq names as his activities: “Piano, MadMacs (interface) and 9volt, ‘non-compliant’ jazz, beats and more.” He works a lot with preprared piano and makes complex yet delicate sounds and rhythms.

Delbecq plays in numerous groups and ensembles, as a band leader, as well as part of a collective or as a sideman.
Before diving into jazz, he was trained in sound technology and was already an assistant film director.
He studied with Dave Holland, Mal Waldron and Steve Coleman, and worked with many musicians from the improv scene like pianists Ethan Iverson and Andy Milne, clarinetists Louis Sclavis, Francois Houle, saxophonists Evan Parker, Steve Lacy, Michael Moore, Tony Malaby and Jorrit Dijkstra, trumpeter Ralph Alessi, British drummer Steve Argüelles. The list of names is much longer … He also composes for film, dance and theater.
