Electro Jazz – Fusion

Something different every time, that is the motto of guitarist John Scofield, one of the most popular jazz guitarists of all time. What more can we say about an all star band with three musicians who have made their mark so extensively? John Scofield – as being the oldest in this group – has had numerous collaborations with musicians from Jazz & Beyond; several of which led to legendary ensembles and albums. In 2013 he surprised with the album Überjam Deux, which he returned to the recipe of funk and jazz fusion that he already tried out in 2002.This was followed by the album Juice with Medeski, Martin & Wood and Scofield himself. And then came something totally different: Past Present (2015) with his old friend Joe Lovano.
In the early eighties John Scofield played with Miles Davis, after which he began a successful solo career. His trio with bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bill Stewart also became legendary. Twice he did a project and album with Medeski, Martin & Wood; had a long-term collaboration with saxophonist Joe Lovano and furthermore worked with ao Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Eddie Harris, Bill Frisell, Brad Mehldau, Jack DeJohnette, Tony Williams, Jim Hall, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Dave Holland. Almost every jazz pianist of today admires Brad Mehldau. Of all the young jazz pianists who builded their careers in the 90’s he is the one that has developed into the most influential. He is being praised worldwide for more than 20 years. It was Mehldau who first combined jazz standards with bold interpretations of songs from pop and rock (Radiohead, The Beatles, Nirvana). He made fascinating stories out of them. What makes Brad Mehldau so special? He is first and foremost an improviser and passionate lover of the surprise and amazement that can occur from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly, in real time. But he also has a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music, shaping everything he plays. While playing, he listens to how the ingredients of a musical piece can be unraveled, and in what order they occur. He feels the story in each melody. It’s like he deconstructs a piece of music as it were, to subsequently reassemble it into a new version.
Mehldau is best known for his trio and solo concerts and albums. He also worked with ao Joshua Redman, Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Lee Konitz, Michael Brecker, Wayne Shorter, John Scofield, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Mark Turner. Nest to this he created music for several movies, including Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut.

He controls it all. Internationally he is becoming recognized more and more for his creative and innovative drumming style.
