Bill Frisell

The Stone in New York gespeeld.

(John Lennon, Guitar in the Space Age, When You Wish Upon a Star)

Oene van Geel Mark Haanstra Shapes of Time

3 times Strings: a blog about two new releases: Music Is van Bill Frisell, en Shapes of Time van Oene van Geel en Mark Haanstra.

Bill Frisell

Bill Frisells sound is one of a kind and very recognizible. He is one of the best known leading jazz guitarists since the end of the 80ies. A pioneer who uses folk, Americana, rock, blues, jazz and country in his music, creating a unique style of his own.
There is always a certain melancholy in his music; the timing is lay-back, there are beautiful melodies and themes, and there is nt one note too many.

Frisell released a new solo album: Music Is. He has certainly played a lot of solo in the meantime, but it took almost 20 years to produce a sequel to the previous solo album Ghost Town.
The nice thing about Bill Frisell is that he has always been in motion. Always looking for new music, looking for new interpretation of a previous musical approach, always analyzing and learning.

“Playing solo or on your own is always a challenge,” says Frisell. “Music is something you do together with others. Like having a conversation. Action and reaction. Playing on my own is really a kind of trip for that matter. I really have to adjust my way of thinking. In the preparation for this album I played in The Stone in New York for a week. Every night I tried out new music that I had not played before. Every time I did my best to bring myself a bit out of balance. Uncomfortable. Uncertain. I did not want to fall back on familiar things that feel safe. I wanted to continue this process in the studio and not plan things in advance. “

The compositions are by Frisell himself and some of them are new, while other titles are solo versions of Frisell classics from before.
Some of the interpretations are really solo-with-only-1-guitar, while others are more orchestrated with overdubbing and looping, making different layers.

In recent years, Frisell has also done many projects with the music of others. (John Lennon, Guitar in the Space Age, When You Wish Upon a Star) “.. That’s how I learn. I could study the work of Burt Bacharach for the rest of my life … or Charlie Parker … or Bach .. It does not stop. But it was just time to go back to my own thing. “

A few of his own ensembles are the Bill Frisell Trio (with Tony Scherr and Kenny Wolleson); 858 Quartet; Bill Frisell’s John Lennon Tribute Band, the duo with drummer Joey Baron.

Over the years Frisell has contributed to the work of Paul Motian, John Zorn, Elvis Costello, Ginger Baker, Van Dyke Parks, Marianne Faithful, John Scofield, Jan Garbarek, Lyle Mays, Vernon Reid, Julius Hemphill and Paul Bley. Wayne Horvitz, David Sanborn and many others, including Bono, Brian Eno, Jon Hassell.
His learning period with Miles Davis is often quoted in the press. The New Yorker writes: “Bill Frisell plays the guitar as Miles Davis played trumpet: in the hands of such radical thinkers, the instruments become completely different animals. And like Davis, Frisell also likes a lot of space when he improvises

Oene van Geel Mark Haanstra Shapes of Time

Oene van Geel (viola) and Mark Haanstra (bass guitar) share a musical history of more than twenty years. By playing the most diverse music together – from jazz to classical music and from Indian music to pop – they developed their own idiom that can best be described as electro-acoustic chamber music.
The debut album was created in collaboration with visual artist Udo Prinsen and guitarist/sound designer Raphael Vanoli who contributed to the album and participate in concerts.

The album is not only a musicproject, but also aproject of images. The title Shapes of Time is related to photos by visual artist Udo Prinsen, who installed various pin-hole cameras during a polar expedition. The light of months then comes together in one photo. Short movements are not visible on the images, but the movements of the sun along the sky as a solidified course of time are. It was a search for slowing down and focus in a world where fragmentation and speed seem to be a trump card.

The music of Mark and Oene (like these images) is built up entirely from elements that have emerged from years playing together and exchanging ideas. The tranquil and contrasty landscapes in the photos created an inspiring focus in the creation of this new album. This created the idea that the subtle and spherical sounds of guitarist/sound designer Raphael Vanoli could make powerful contributions to connecting sound and vision. Both the music and the photographs of Udo Prinsen give a transformed image of reality. You hear and see things that you know, but in an unusual form.

Oene and Mark both love many kinds of music: ranging from simple melodies to complex rhythms; from clear to unexpected. Improvising is an important ingredient to be able to playfully adventure. This results in a varied and attractive result on this album.
