40e editie Northsea Jazz Festival (1)

Vanaf vandaag een serie van 10 blogs over het Northsea Jazz Festival 2015, dat zijn 40e editie beleeft op 10, 11 en 12 juli in Ahoy Rotterdam.


De allereerste editie van het North Sea Jazz Festival vond in 1976 plaats in het Congresgebouw in Den Haag. 6 concertzalen, 300 muzikanten en zo’n 9000 bezoekers. In dit eerste festivaljaar traden jazzlegendes op als Sarah Vaughan, Lee Konitz, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie en Stan Getz. Uit de Nederlandse scene oa Han Bennink (dit jaar artist in residence!), Misha Mengelberg, John Engels, Hans Dulfer, Boy Edgar, Dutch Swing College Band. Festivalorganisator was de bekende Paul Acket.

NSJF is gegroeid naar 15 concertzalen, circa 1300 musici en een bezoekersaantal dat tussen de 65.000-70.000 ligt en sinds 2006 is het festival in Ahoy Rotterdam. Dit jaar de 40e editie met opnieuw 3 dagen jazz & beyond – artiesten uit binnen en buitenland, van jong tot oud, van nieuw tot arrivé. De komende weken op deze site 9 blogs waarin ik een persoonlijke keuze maak, die puur voortkomt uit nieuwsgierigheid naar de concerten van deze artiesten.
De compositie-opdracht van NSJF gaat dit jaar naar gitarist Reinier Baas, en de Paul Acket Award naar pianist Tigran Hamasyan. (video’s zie onder)

From today a series of 10 blogs about the North Sea Jazz Festival 2015, which is celebrating its 40th edition on 10, 11 and 12 July in Ahoy Rotterdam.

The first edition of the North Sea Jazz Festival took place in 1976 at the Congress Centre in The Hague. 6 concert halls, 300 artists and about 9,000 visitors. In this first festival year jazz legends such as Sarah Vaughan, Lee Konitz, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz performed. From the Dutch scene ao Han Bennink (this year’s artist in residence!), Misha Mengelberg, John Engels, Hans Dulfer, Boy Edgar, Dutch Swing College Band. Festival organizer was the famous Paul Acket.

NSJF has grown into 15 concert halls, about 1300 artists and 65000-70000 visitors and since 2006, the festival in Ahoy Rotterdam. This year celebraties the 40th edition with another 3 days of jazz & beyond – artists from home and abroad, from young to old, from new to established. In the coming weeks on this site 9 blogs in which I make a personal choice fed by pure curiosity about the concerts of these artists.
The NSJF composition assignment of this year goes to guitarist Reinier Baas, and the Paul Acket Award to pianist Tigran Hamasyan.
