ENGLISH VERSION

Soft Power on a baritone-guitar

An acoustic baritone guitar is not very current, and actually you can not even see straight away that you’re dealing with a larger-than-average guitar. Between the guitar and the bass guitar , and with a warm sound.
In February was the 5th edition of Club 100 – monthly evenings in Zaal 100 in Amsterdam  where young talents and experienced musicians meet each other to play. Organized by guitarist Corrie van Binsbergen and several young musicians. That evening the Flemish duo Linus played there as well: Ruben Machtelinckx on acoustic baritone guitar and Thomas Jillings on alto clarinet and tenorsax.
The two young musicians release their CD Onland (label Onland) tis month and will be playing several times in Belgium.

LINUS LNThomas Jillings plays alto and tenor saxophone, and he does that quite soft, with a hoarse voice. The two make simple but melodic and melancholic compositions, where the interaction and merging of the sound of the two instruments are very important  It’s more about the whole than about theme-solo-accompaniment. They play their own compositions and improvise as well, though mainly that remain shorter trips.
The Belgian resencent Koen van Meel wrote about this album: ” ( … ) soft power works. Surely it works in a musical way; guitarist Ruben Machtelinckx and reed player Thomas Jillings prove that here. They ‘brush’ their compositions togehter with shades of pastel, combining the best of the ECM catalog, the poetry of Nick Drake and the liquid smoothness of the old Jimmy Giuffre. “

Ruben Machtelinckx (1986) graduated at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp in 2010 with great distinction. As a freelance musician, Ruben performed together with fellow musicians such as Teun Verbruggen, Kris Defoort, Joachim Badenhorst, Erwin Vann, Bart Maris, Kurt Van Herck, Peter Evans, Iva Bittova, Hilmar Jensson.
He was the leader of the band Phynt with oa tenorsaxophonist Erwin Vann. He currently plays and composes for Amydala (Kurt Van Herck/ Nathan Wouters) and a duo with guitarist Karl Van Deun. In 2012 he went to Copenhagen to take some lessons with Jakob Bro and to record his first album as leader with Hilmar Jensson, Joachim Badenhorst and Nathan Wouters. (EL Negocito Records). He is an active musician in different side projects ranging from impro to pop.

Thomas Jillings is a young reed player and improviser. He is the leader of An Expedition into the Mind of Sgt. Fuzzy, a band that combines influences from jazz, rock, ambient, electronic and noise music and which features some of Antwerp’s and Holland’s most promising musicians (Bert Dockx, Gerri Jaeger, Nathan Wouters, Ruben Machtelinckx)
Another quartet Machtelinckx is performing with is “Machtelinckx-Jensson-Badenhorst-Wouters”

Ruben Machtelinckx recorded his debut album, ‘Faerge’, in Copenhagen. The music is played by two guitarists Ruben Machtelinckx and Hilmar Jensson, Joachim Badenhorst on reeds and Nathan Wouters on double bass. These atypical cast produces a distinctive and soothing sound. Strong melodies and earthy progressions form the basis of the compositions that often have a melancholic undertone. The music consists of atmospheric, warm, poetic sounds, and allows the individuality of each musician to come forward. The emphasis is on the sound texture and homogeneity of the music, which among other things means that the musicians think as more composers than as solo act.
