Terence Blanchard is een fantastisch trompettist en bandleider en een zeer succesvol componist van talloze filmsoundtracks en theaterproducties. Sinds Blanchard in 1980 begon bij het orkest van Lionel Hampton en daarna bij Art Blakey en de Jazz Messengers (als vervanger van Wynton Marsalis), heeft hij zich onuitwisbaar op de kaart gezet in de jazz.

Blanchard staat bekend als een straight-ahead-jazz speler in de hardbop traditie, uiterst gecontroleerd qua spel en embouchure. Maar als filmcomponist is hij nog wel het meest bekend geworden: hij componeerde de soundtracks voor alle films van Spike Lee sinds 1991. Zijn trompet is te horen op bijna vijftig filmmuziekalbums.

Daarnaast won hij meerdere Grammies, viert succes met zijn album Magnetic op Blue Note (2013) en overtuigde in datzelfde jaar ook met zijn jazz-opera The Champion.
Hij speelde uiteraard met velen, o.a. jazzvocalisten Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, Dianne Reeves en Cassandra Wilson en pianist McCoy Tyner.
Sinds 2000 is Blanchard artistiek directeur bij het Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. Met ingang van augustus 2011 werd hij benoemd tot artistiek directeur van het Henry Mancini Institute aan de Universiteit van Miami Frost School of Music.

Terence Blanchard is a great trumpeter and bandleader and a very successful composer of numerous film soundtracks and theatermusic. Blanchard is known as a straight -ahead jazz player in the hard bop tradition, has his playing and embouchure under control. But as a film composer, he is still best known: he composed the soundtracks for all the films of Spike Lee since 1991. His trumpet can be heard on nearly fifty soundtrack albums.
He also won several Grammys; his album Magnetic Blue Note (2013) is very succesfull and he convinced everybody in the same year with his jazz opera The Champion
