In aanloop naar het Northsea Jazz Festival 2014  (11, 12 en 13 juli in Ahoy, Rotterdam) is hier een serie blogs gewijd aan verschillende artiesten die dit jaar op NSJ spelen. De keuze van de bands & musici in deze serie blogs is zuiver ingegeven door persoonlijke interesse en nieuwsgierigheid.

De Amerikaanse trompettist Ambrose Akinmusire is de winnaar van  de Paul Acket Award 2014!
Akinmusire staat bekend om de emotionele impact van zijn spel. Hij durft zijn weergaloze techniek in dienst te stellen van zijn songs, en daarmee doet hij iets wat Miles Davis ook deed. Hij ontwikkelde zijn eigen muzikale stijl door op zoek te gaan naar een dynamische manier van spelen en bovendien samen te werken met artiesten van verschillende achtergronden.

Op het NSJ neemt hij de bijzondere vocalist Theo Bleckmann mee, die bij zijn optredens ook vaak gebruik maakt van electronica.

Ambrose Akinmusire groeide op in Californië, waar hij ontdekt werd door saxofonist Steve Coleman. Hij kreeg les van Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter en Terence Blanchard, en hij won de Thelonious Monk Competition in 2007. Hij werkte o.a. samen met Esperanza Spalding en Jason Moran. Zijn nieuwste album The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier To Paint verscheen in maart op het vermaarde Blue Note-label.

American trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire is the winner of the Paul Acket Award 2014.
AmbroseAkinmusire is known for the emotional impact of his playing. He dares to employ his matchless technique at the service of the songs, and thus he does something Miles Davis did. He developed his own musical style by looking for a dynamic style of playing, and additionally work with artists from different backgrounds. In the NSJ he brings in the special vocalist Theo Bleckmann , who makes frequent use of electronics in his music.
