Het Northsea Jazz Festival 2014 vindt plaats op 11, 12 en 13 juli in Ahoy, Rotterdam. In aanloop daar naar toe hier een serie blogs, gewijd aan verschillende artiesten die dit jaar op NSJ spelen. De keuze van de bands & musici in deze serie is zuiver ingegeven door persoonlijke interesse en nieuwsgierigheid.

Veelbelovend jong saxofonist Chet Doxas en de al vele malen gelauwerde virtuoze trompettist Dave Douglas leiden een nieuw samenwerkingsproject ter ere van de muzikale erfenis van de componist, bandleider, jazzsaxofonist en klarinettist Jimmy Giuffre (1921-2008). Niet bedoeld als een reeks tribute-concerten, maar met eigen ideeën en stukken.

Giuffre volgde vele spannende paden in de muziek, had een grote melodische vindingrijkheid, kon ritmisch subtiel spelen en had improvisatorische vrijheid hoog in het vaandel.

Naast Douglas en Doxas horen we ook de topbassist Steve Swallow (ooit lid van het Jimmy Giuffre Trio, die toen een vriendelijke vorm van free jazz maakte) en drummer Jim Doxas, die net als zijn broer Chet afkomstig is uit Montreal.
Steve Swallow zegt er dit over:”Toen Jimmy, Paul Bley en ik in de jaren 60 samen muziek maakten kwam het niet bij ons op, dat die decennia later wéér zou klinken. We hadden eigenlijk gewoon een leuke tijd, en ondertussen verzonnen we die muziek. Zoals Gil Evans het ooit noemde: een feestje met een doel. Het is enorm bevredigend om te ontdekken dat die muziek nog steeds leeft en ook nog eens in goede handen is. Dave, Chet en Jim doen precies wat we toen deden: zoeken naar manieren om muziek te blijven vernieuwen. Er is niet veel veranderd, en toch is het allemaal weer nieuw. ”

Promising young saxophonist Chet Doxas and virtuoso trumpeter Dave Douglas lead a new collaborative project honoring the musical legacy of composer, bandleader, jazz saxophonist and clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre (1921-2008). Not intended as a series of tribute concerts, but with their own ideas and pieces.
Giuffre blazed many trails in music, inspiring new levels of melodic invention, rhythmic subtlety and improvisational freedom.
Next to Douglas and Doxas we hear top bass player Steve Swallow (once a member of the Jimmy Giuffre Trio, which then made a kind of free jazz) and drummer Jim Doxas, who like his brother Chet is from Montreal.
Here’s what Steve Swallow says about it:
“When Jimmy, Paul Bley and I made music together in the 60‘s it didn’t occur to us that it would reverberate over decades. We were, when it came down to it, having a good time, making stuff up as we went along. As Gil Evans once said: ‘a party with a purpose.’ It’s tremendously satisfying to find that music, and the impulses behind it, still alive, and in such strong hands. Dave, Chet and Jim are doing exactly what we were doing back then: looking for ways to move music into new places. Nothing much has changed, and yet it’s all new again.”
