Nels Cline is sinds een jaar of tien vooral beroemd als gitarist in de Amerikaanse altrock-band Wilco, waarin hij de aandacht trekt met buitenissige solo’s en elektronische uitspattingen. Maar hij heeft nog veel meer in huis: hij is een van de weinige gitaristen die makkelijk kunnen schakelen tussen jazz, improvisatiemuziek en rock zonder dat het ‘bedacht’ aanvoelt.
Zelf vindt hij het onzin om een purist te zijn: ‘I’m not in any one genre, and never have been. I was a rock ’n’ roll kid, but after hearing Coltrane and Miles and Weather Report, then Indian music and Nigerian pop and that sort of thing, there was no turning back. From that point on, the idea of purism just was not possible’ (Nels Cline).

The Nels Cline Singers is een instrumentale band. Cline speelt met bassist Trevor Dunn, drummer Scott Amendola en percussionist Cyro Baptista.
In de muziek steeds veel verrassingen, vaak binnen hetzelfde nummer. Schakelend tussen uiteenlopende stijlen, van psychedelica tot Braziliaanse lounge-jazz en van elektronische ambient tot garagerock.
In zijn spannende en originele spel combineert Cline een breed scala aan muziekstijlen: van jazz, punk en alternatieve rock tot vrije improvisatie en experimentele electronica.
Voorheen maakte hij naam als jazzgitarist met een voorliefde voor rock en noise. Hij speelde in de jaren 80 al in de band van saxofonist Julius Hemphill, met zijn tweelingbroer Alex Cline op drums. (Ze begonnen allebei op 12jarige leeftijd te spelen). Hij werkte samen met indie-rockhelden als Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) en Mike Watt (The Stooges), maar ook met gerenommeerde jazzmusici als Charlie Haden en Tim Berne.

Cline speelt mee op meer dan 150 platen in alle stijlen: jazz, pop, rock, country, expermentele pop. Afgelopen jaar bracht hij verschillende albums uit: een duo-album met jazzgitarist Julian Lage, een samenwerking met Medeski, Martin & Wood en een nieuw album met de Nels Cline Singers ‘Macroscope’, de 5e plaat van de groep.
Rolling Stone magazine betitelde hem in 2011 als ‘one of the greatest guitarists of all time’.

Nels Cline is especially famous for 10 years now as a guitarist in the US Altrock band Wilco, in which he draws attention with outlandish solos and electronic weirdness. But he has a lot more to offer: he is one of the few guitarists that is able to easily switch between jazz, improvised music and rock without sounding contrived.
He himself thinks it’s nonsense to be a purist, “I’m not in any one genre, and never have been. I was a rock ‘n’ roll kid, but after hearing Coltrane and Miles and Weather Report, then Indian music and Nigerian pop and That sort of thing, there was no turning back. Previously, Cline was known as a jazz guitarist with a penchant for rock and noise. He played in the band of saxophonist Julius Hemphill in the 80s, together with his twin brother Alex Cline on drums. (They both started playing from12 years old). He collaborated with indie-rock heroes like Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and Mike Watt (The Stooges), but also with renowned jazz musicians such as Charlie Haden and Tim Berne. In Wilco he plays from 2004 on.
