Snoeiharde punk, totale vrije impro, heavy noise, alternatieve rock, heftige dynamiek:
het komt allemaal uit de koker van bassist Luc Ex. 20 jaar lang was hij bassist in en drijvende kracht achter in The Ex, van 1983 tot 2003. Een overtuigd improvisator, die immer consequent heeft gekozen voor niet-commerciele, vrije en geimproviseerde muziek.
Luc Ex brengt al jarenlang eigenzinnige musici van over de hele wereld samen in verschillende bands. Luc Ex’ Assemblée is zijn versie van een jazzkwartet waarin zijn achtergrond in de alternatieve rock en noise goed uit de verf komt.
Op 21-3 in het Bimhuis in Amsterdam (en vervolgens nog 6 keer in verschillende andere landen). Het concert in het Bimhuis is ook live en achteraf te horen via Bimhuis Radio

Luc componeerde materiaal voor een improviserende band met de aparte bezetting van 2 tenorsaxen, acoustische basgitaar en drums. Saxofoniste Ingrid Laubrock uit Brooklyn is een bekende naam uit de improscene van New York. Ze staat bekend om haar abstracte en toch lyrische spel. Ze speelt met haar eigen bands Sleepthief en Anti-House in ensembles van Anthony Braxton en drummer Tom Rainey. Rietblazer Ab Baars is al 30 jaar één van de steunpilaren van de Nederlandse geïmproviseerde muziek (oa ICP Orchestra, Ab Baars Trio). Hamid Drake uit Chicago is één van de belangrijkste vooruitstrevende drummers van deze tijd. Hij werkte eerder samen met o.a. Don Cherry, Peter Brötzman, David Murray en Pharoah Sanders.
Een overtuigend citaat uit de Volkskrant: ‘Een typische Luc Ex-baslijn, zo bondig en gecondenseerd als een haiku-gedicht, en tegelijkertijd vol karakter en weemoed. In de herhaling gaat dit baslijntje al snel werken als de vooraankondiging van groot onheil. Zeker als je Luc Ex tekeer ziet gaan op zijn instrument: dat neigt bijna naar goede moderne dans, zo meeslepend en fysiek ranselt hij de noten uit het hout’ .
The Ex begon in 1979 als een anarchistische punkimproband, waarin de musici niet goed hoefden te kunnen spelen. Het ging in 1e instantie meer om het uitschreeuwen van onvrede! Eerst was het een kwartet: Terrie (gitaar), Sok (vocals), Geurt (drums), and René (bass). De keuze voor wie welk instrument zou bespelen werd gemaakt door strootjes te trekken 😉
De band werd beroemd en kreeg grote internationale erkenning voor de onconventionele en frisse interpretatie van de muziek en de verschillende stijlen, hun consistente politieke houding, hun ‘organische manier’ van muziek maken en het feit dat ze hun zelfstandigheid hielden en niet in zee gingen met de commerciële muziekbusiness. In 1999 won The Ex de nederlandse ‘BV Popprijs’. The Ex werkte met kunstenaars en musici als Han Bennink, Ab Baars, Wolter Wierbos, amerikaanse avantgarde cellist Tom Cora, Koerdische zangeres Brader, de Malinese groep Lanaya en popgroepen zoals Sonic Youth. The Ex bestaat nog steeds.
The Ex in 1989
Luc Ex en cellist Tom Cora begonnen in 1995 met de groep ROOF. Een kwartet met de vocale virtuoos Phil Minton en drummer Michael Vatcher. Na de tragische dood van Tom Cora ging de groep verder onder de naam 4WALLS met pianist Veryan Weston. Beide groepen kregen internationale erkenning en speelden op vele grote Europese jazzfestivals. Ze kregen met name waardering voor hun nieuwe benadering van de combinatie van strak gerepeteerde stukken met vrije improvisaties. (tot 2008)
Na zijn vertrek uit The Ex begon Luc verschillende nieuwe muzikale projecten en ging ook zijn eigen muziek componeren. Zo deed hij oa een project met de Belgische absurdist Kamagurka.
Hij startte de vrije-popgroep Rubatong, met oa vocalist Han Burhs en marimbaspeelster Tatiana Koleva.
Verder speelt hij oa nog met Naked Wolf: hardcore noise, vrije impro & dansbare groove met oa Gerri Jaeger – drums, Felicity Provan – trompet en Yedo Gibson – sax.
En met ‘BOUGE’ , een vrije impro-trio met de franse zangeres en clarinettiste Isabelle Duthoit and trombonist Johannes Bauer

Luc composed material for an improvising band with the unusual cast of two tenor saxophones, acoustic bass and drums. Saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock from Brooklyn is a famous name in the improv scene of New York. She is known for her abstract and yet lyrical playing. She plays with her own bands Sleepthief and Anti-House; ensembles by Anthony Braxton and drummer Tom Rainey. Reed player Ab Baars is one of the mainstays of the Dutch improvised music for 30 years (ICP Orchestra, Ab Baars Trio eo). Hamid Drake from Chicago is a very progressive drummer. He previously worked with Don Cherry, Peter Brötzman, David Murray and Pharoah Sanders.
