Avontuurlijke zoektocht
Om de muziek van de Antwerpse klarinettist en saxofonist Joachim Badenhorst te omschrijven is misschien vooral de term ‘avontuur’ het meest op zijn plaats.
Hij zoekt naar een nieuwe muzikale taal, waarin de grenzen tussen compositie en improvisatie verdwijnen, en waarin harmonie wordt afgewisseld met abstract klankonderzoek.
Joachim behoort al enkele jaren tot de boeiendste figuren uit de Belgische improvisatiewereld. Zijn prachtige toon op klarinet(ten) en zijn nieuwsgierigheid naar alle vormen van improvisatiemuziek brachten hem tot samenwerkingen met hele diverse musici en ensembles.
In het Bimhuis heeft hij op 25 juni een carte blanche. Hij opent solo en treedt daarna op met verschillende bands. Op 27 juni Carate Urio Orchestra @ Copacobano Festival, Gent. Met het Han Bennink trio op het Northsea Jazz Festival op 11 juli.
Over Badenhorst is al eerder eens geschreven: ‘Hij speelt met de emotionele onthechting en coole lichtheid van een jonge Lee Konitz en deelt zijn melodieuze genie met zijn leermeester Michael Moore.’ Geen geringe complimenten. Hij maakte een soloalbum, ‘The Jungle He Told Me’ met 9 stukken op klarinet, basklarinet en tenorsaxofoon. Daarin onderzoekt hij alle mogelijkheden van zijn instrumenten: bereik, boventonen, golvende melodieën, geluiden.
Rawfishboys, het duo met de Franse contrabassist Brice Soniano balanceert tussen harmonie, melodische improvisatie en abstracte klankexploraties. Het duo ontstond op het Conservatorium Den Haag, waar beide musici studeerden. Soniano is actief in zowel jazz als hedendaagse klassieke ensembles.
Os Meus Shorts betekent ‘mijn boxershorts’ in het Portugees. Het repertoire bestaat uit hele korte composities van gitarist Nico Roig uit Barcelona. Een soort muzikaal notitieboek. Met grappige videoclips
Baloni ontstond in New York, waar de drie leden op dat moment woonden. Vertrekkend vanuit improvisatie ontwikkelde dit trio een kamermuziek-achtige sereniteit. Baloni heeft drie albums uitgebracht op het label Cleanfeed.
Drie jaar geleden richtte Badenhorst zijn Carate Urio Orchestra op, een septet waar hij verschillende leden van zijn langlopende kleinere groepen (Rawfishboys, Mógil, Baloni, Os Meus Shorts, Red Rocket) in samenbrengt.
Carate Urio Orchestra was een droom van Joachim Badenhorst: een groter ensemble op te starten met een breed instrumentaal klankpalet, een muzikaal laboratorium waarin geëxperimenteerd kan worden met verschillende stijlen. De muzikanten delen alleen een basis in jazz en improvisatiemuziek en bewandelen met een open geest nieuwe muzikale wegen. Met invloeden uit postrock, filmmuziek en minimalisme.
Joachim Badenhorst (Antwerpen, 1981) bouwt sinds een tiental jaar aan een eigenzinnig parcours in de Belgische en internationale jazz- en improvisatiewereld.
Han Bennink koos Joachim voor zijn eerste trio onder eigen naam, Tony Malaby pikte hem op voor de nieuwe band Novela, samen met drummer John Hollenbeck, trompettist Ralph Alessi en pianiste Kris Davis. Daarnaast speelt hij o.a. in Tony Malaby’s Novela, Kris Davis’ Infrasound en Thomas Heberer’s Clarino. Naast het spelen en componeren in verschillende ensembles focust Badenhorst zich sinds enkele jaren ook op solo-performances.
Nadat hij een paar jaar lang van New York zijn uitvalsbasis gemaakt had, focust Badenhorst zich opnieuw op de Europese scène: België, Frankrijk, IJsland, Ierland, Oostenrijk, Nederland, Denemarken.
De muziek die Joachim maakt met al die musici maakt is heel divers, evenals hun achtergronden. Zoals daar zijn: experimentele kamermuziek met de Deense zangeres Sissel Vera Pettersen en gitarist Mikkel Ploug; fragiele IJslandse folk bij Mogil (zie video), met o.a. gitarist Hilmar Jensson; sfeervol en warm met een melancholische ondertoon bij de groep van gitarist Ruben Machtelinckx (zie video); vrije impro met rock en groove bij de Celano Baggiani Group. Badenhorst kiest graag voor kleine bezettingen, waar de persoonlijkheid van iedere musicus van groot belang is.
Sinds een paar jaar heeft hij ook een eigen platenlabel: KLEIN

Adventurous quest
To describe the music of the Antwerp clarinetist and saxophonist Joachim Badenhorst it might be best to speak of an adventurous quest. He is searching for a new musical language, where the boundaries between composition and improvisation disappear, and where harmony is interspersed with abstract sound research.
Joachim is one of the most fascinating figures in the Belgian improv scene. His beautiful tone on clarinet(s) and his curiosity for all forms of improv music led him to collaborations with very diverse musicians and ensembles.
At the Bimhuis he has carte blanche on the 25th of June. He opens with a solo act and then plays with various of his own bands.
On June 27 Carate Urio Orchestra @ Copacobano Festival, Ghent. With Han Bennink Trio at the North Sea Jazz Festival on July 11.

Three years ago Badenhorst founded his Carate Urio Orchestra, a septet in which several members of his smaller groups take part (Rawfishboys, Mogil, Baloni, Os Meus Shorts, Red Rocket).
Carate Urio Orchestra was a dream of Joachim Badenhorst: to start a larger ensemble with a broad instrumental palette, a musical laboratory for experimenting with different styles. The musicians share a base in jazz and improvised music and tread new musical paths with an open mind. With influences from post-rock, film music and minimalism.
Joachim Badenhorst (Antwerp, 1981) is following a very personal and willful trail in the Belgian and international jazz and improv scene. Scuh as: experimental chamber music with the Danish singer Sissel Vera Pettersen and guitarist Mikkel Ploug; fragile Icelandic folk at Mogil, which includes guitarist Hilmar Jensson; atmospheric and warm with a melancholic undertone in the group of guitarist Ruben Machtelinckx; free improv with rock and groove n the Celano Baggiani Group.
Badenhorst likes to work with small ensembles, where the personality of each individual musician is of great importance. He also has his own record label: KLEIN
