IJzersterke latin & salsa
Als je CD’s in Zuid Amerika op grote schaal illegaal gekopieerd worden, is dat het grootste compliment dat je als Europees Latin orkest maar kan krijgen ;-). Het gebeurt op grote schaal met de albums van Cubop City Big Band, één van de beste salsa & latinorkesten van Nederland.
Het orkest bestaat 20 jaar (!) en viert dat met een uitgebreid jubileumprogramma ‘Yesterday, Today Tomorrow’. Het begin van de jubileumtour wordt ingevuld met onverwoestbare songs van Earth, Wind & Fire bewerkt voor salsa- en latin jazz-bigband, met Spaanse teksten! Met andere woorden: Tierra, Viento Y Fuego.
Fantasy, September, Boogie Wonderland en vele andere klassiekers van de legendarische Amerikaanse pop/funkband komen voorbij in sensationele versies.
De nieuwe arrangementen zijn geschreven door de legendarische Colombiaanse arrangeur Edy Martinez (Tito Puente, Ray Barretto), pianist Marc Bischoff en trombonist Ilja Reijngoud.
Andere thema’s binnen het jubileum programma Yesterday Today Tomorrow zullen zijn: ‘De muziek van Tito Rodriguez’ en ‘Latin Monk’ met bewerkingen van de muziek van Thelonious Monk.

Cubop City Big Band is een succesvolle internationale salsa bigband van 20 muzikanten en is geliefd over de hele wereld. Oprichter en drijvende kracht is fusiondrummer Lucas van Merwijk. De band geeft over de hele wereld optredens en wordt van Europa tot Zuid-Amerika bejubeld. De CD’s van de Cubop City Big Band worden in Zuid Amerika op grote schaal illegaal gekopieerd; het grootste compliment dat je als Europees Latin orkest maar kan krijgen.
CCBB is vernoemd naar de New Yorkse club ‘Cubop City’. Daar traden in de jaren 40-50 grootheden als Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie en Chano Pozo op.
De band heeft zeven albums op zijn naam staan met muziek van oa Machito (the Machito Project) Beny Moré (Moré and More), Arsenio Rodriguez (Arsenio) and Grupo Afrocuba (Que Sensacion!).
Toen CCBB bijna ten onder ging doordat er geen geld meer was, kreeg het orkest in 2009 onverwachts subsidie van het ministerie van OCW en werd het mogelijk in elk geval twee jaar op projectbasis door te gaan. Onder de noemer Otro Mundo belichtte het orkest een andere kant van de Zuid-Amerikaanse muziekcultuur en deed projecten met de Peruaanse superster Eva Ayllon en de Colombiaanse harpvirtuoos Edmar Casteneda.
De bandleden zijn afkomstig uit Nederland, Puerto Rico, Panama, Duitsland, USA en Venezuela. Het orkest heeft in de loop der jaren met een respectabel aantal grote namen uit de latin scene gewerkt waaronder Alfredo ‘Chocolate’ Armenteros, Edy Martinez, Andy Gonzalez (Libre, Tito Puente), Armando Peraza (Carlos Santana), Luis Conte, Nelson Gonzales (Cachao, Gloria Estefan), Paul Simon), Edmar Castañeda en Roberto Quintero.
De band had meerdere hits op radio stations in Zuid Amerika en de Verenigde Staten (Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York). Hun album Moré and More werd gekozen tot nummer 2 op de lijst ‘Best Latin Album of 1998’ in het New York Latin Beat magazine.
De band heeft drie tournees naar Zuid Amerika ondernomen en stond driemaal op het North Sea Jazz Festival.
Lucas van Merwijk werd door de lezers van De Slagwerkkrant tussen 1993 en 2013 vele malen gekozen tot beste jazz en beste world/fusion drummer. Hij studeerde afro-cubaanse drums in Cuba bij drummer Oscarito Valdes (Irakere, Afro Cuba). Lucas heeft in veel nederlandse groepen gespeeld, waaronder sinds 1985 de nr 1 Latin Jazz groep van Europa, Nueva Manteca.
Lucas leidt/leidde zelf Cubop City Big Band, het slagwerkduo Drumix met de afrikaanse sabar master drummer Aly N’Diaye Rose en de wereldpercussie groep Drums United.

The orchestra celebrates it’s 20th anniversary (!) with an extensive jubilee program “Yesterday, Today Tomorrow ‘. Under the heading Otro Mundo the orchestra highlighted South American music culture, doing projects with the Peruvian superstar Eva Ayllon and the Colombian harp virtuoso Edmar Casteneda.
