November Music 2015: Colours of Improvisation

19.30 – 20.30 Harmen Fraanje, Ambrose Akinmusire, & Theo Bleckmann.
21.00 – 22.00 Eric Vloeimans & Jon Balke
22.30 – 23.30 Phronesis

Harmen Fraanje, Ambrose Akinmusire (VS) & Theo Bleckmann (DL)

Eric Vloeimans & Jon Balke (NO)

Harmen Fraanje, Ambrose Akinmusire (USA) & Theo Bleckmann (DL)
A new musical encounter with an unusual trio of trumpet, vocals and piano: Ambrose Akinmusire (USA), Theo Bleckmann (DL) and Harmen Fraanje (NL)
American trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire has a super technique, but puts that at the service of his songs. He developed his own musical style by search for a dynamic way of playing and also by collaborating with artists from different backgrounds. He has won several awards, including the Paul Ackett Award (North Sea Jazz Festival) in 2014.

Ambrose was discovered by saxophonist Steve Coleman. He was taught by Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Terence Blanchard, and he won the Thelonious Monk Competition in 2007 and the Paul Acket Award in 2014.

He worked with ao Esperanza Spalding and Jason Moran. His latest album The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier To Paint appeared in March at the renowned Blue Note label.

He’s at November Music with the special German/American vocalist Theo Bleckmann, someone who in his performances often uses electronics. Bleckmann himself did avant garde projects, like for instance ‘songs in the key of d’; with songs about the delicate subject of death and transcendence. He worked together with composers John Zorn, Laurie Anderson and Philip Glass.

Harmen Fraanje we’e seen in recent years playing a lot wiht the trio with cellist Ernst Reijseger and Senegalese singer Molla Sylla. But meanwhile he played all over the world with jazz greats such as Kenny Wheeler, Mark Turner, Philip Catherine, Jesse van Ruller, Eric Vloeimans, Magik Malik, Han Bennink, Michael Moore, Bruce Soniano.
But whoever he plays with, he can be recognized everywhere by his lyrical piano playing.

Eric Vloeimans & Jon Balke (NO)
Jon Balke is a Norwegian pianist/keyboardist and composer, partly classically trained, partly jazz. At the end of the 70’s he also played ethnic music. Later on he played with different free jazz musicians. Maybe because of this he became very good at combining East-West South, acoustic-electric, composed and improvised. He made beautiful albums for the prestigious ECM label, including his world music project Siwan and Magnetic North Orchestra.

Eric Vloeimans we know as the trumpet player with the velvet voice, the hoarse whisper through his musical notes, with his lyrical melodies and soloos with dramatic impact.
Vloeimans currently plays a lot with his electro quartet Gatecrash and his trio Oliver’s Cinema. But he played with many different musicians and groups, including those from other genres such as Wende, Kyteman, DJ Armin van Buuren, the Baroque Society, reed quintet Calefax.
Eric Vloeimans meeting with Jon Balke has long been on his wish list. It’s going to happen now.

Phronesis
jasper hoibyPhronesis is the final act of this Colours of Improvisation. A trio that produces a lot of energy, groove and virtuoso rhythms. Bassist Jasper Høiby (DK) is the founder of this group, and someone who sometimes plays his bass dizzyingly fast. Pianist Ivo Naeme (ENG) provides the melodic piano lines, with which he makes the music very accessible. And drummer Anton Eger (NO / SWE) takes care of the tightness in the repertoire of phronesis. There is no dominant force of one instrument in Phronesis and that makes the synergy very clear. The trio has been around for 10 years and made five CDs, that were very well received everywhere in Australia, North America and Europe – like their tours.
