Tony Roe: creatief en vernieuwend
Het Northsea Jazz Festival 2014 vindt plaats op 11, 12 en 13 juli in Ahoy, Rotterdam. In aanloop daar naar toe is hier een serie blogs gewijd aan verschillende artiesten die dit jaar op NSJ spelen. De keuze van de bands & musici in deze serie blogs is zuiver ingegeven door persoonlijke interesse en nieuwsgierigheid. Daarbij mede gebruik makend van informatie die in de brochure van het festival te vinden is. Waar zou ik zelf naar toe willen gaan?
Pianist Tony Roe kreeg dit jaar de compositie-opdracht die het NSJF ieder jaar verstrekt aan een veelbelovend Nederlandse jazz-componist.

Roe componeert voor een zevenkoppig ensemble, met daarin drie gerenommeerde jazzstrijkers, een basklarinettist, hedendaagse dans en interactieve visuals.

Daaruit blijkt meteen al dat Tony Roe graag multimediaal bezig is. Hij is namelijk ook industrieel ontwerper en is geïnteresseerd in het muziek creëren uit niet-muzikale elementen.
Vaak maakt hij gebruik van hedendaagse technieken met sampling, klankvervorming en video.
Hij zoekt en vindt steeds nieuwe manieren van improvisatie door bewegend beeld en andere media volledig interactief te laten zijn met muziek.
Het meest duidelijk komt dat tot uiting in zijn trio Tin Men & The Telephone, dat naam maakte met inventief gebruik van video, live-sampling en interactieve technologie. Het laatste album Appjenou?! werd uitgegeven in de vorm van een app voor mobiele telefoon. Tin Men & The Telephone doen op NSJ een kindervoorstelling op zondag 6 juli om 14:00
Uit een interview met hem door Tim Sprangers in 2011: ‘Laatst hebben we een nieuw stuk gemaakt met koeien. Dat is een leuk gegeven, maar vervolgens is het toch best lastig om om die koeiengeluiden heen te fraseren. Ach, het is in ieder geval weer iets heel anders dan een compositie bedacht vanuit akkoorden. (…) Ik geloof dat je moet grijpen naar wat het dichtst bij je staat. En in mijn geval is dat klassieke muziek en hiphop. Je improviseert natuurlijk veel binnen jazz, maar wat ik raar vind is dat er verwacht wordt dat creativiteit alleen maar binnen de muzikale taal van jazz kan plaatsvinden. Volgens mij kon Bach geweldig improviseren, anders zou hij nooit tot zulke mooie vondsten zijn gekomen. Naast jazz ben ik daarom echt bezig om het in die hoeken te zoeken, kruisbestuivingen dus. Verder wil ik muziek creëren uit niet-muzikale elementen, dat is iets wat me al heel mijn leven boeit. Geluiden van buitenaf. Je komt erachter dat je met alles muziek kan maken… samples, electronica, multimedia (visuals, dans), goede marketing, humor, relativeringsvermogen…”
Tony Roe studeerde klassieke piano aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag, jazzpiano aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam en muziektechnologie aan de HKU. Ook studeerde hij aan de faculteit Industrieel Ontwerpen van de TU Delft. In New York volgde hij lessen bij geestverwante musici Jason Moran, Jean-Michel Pilc en Ari Hoenig.

The North Sea Jazz Festival 2014 will take place on 11, 12 and 13 July in Ahoy, Rotterdam.
In anticipation this is the start of a series of blogs dedicated to various artists who play at NSJ this year. Pianist Tony Roe received this year’s composition assignment that NSJF provides to a promising Dutch jazz composer each year.

Roe composes this for a seven- piece ensemble, with three leading jazz strings, a bass clarinet, contemporary dance and interactive visuals.

this shows rightaway that Tony Roe likes to work with multimedia. He is a kind of industrial designer and is interested in creating music from non-musical elements.
He often uses contemporary techniques with sampling, sounddistortion and video. He seeks and finds new ways of improvisation through using visuals and other media in his fully interactive
music. This is reflected in his trio Tin Men & The Telephone , which made its name with inventive use of video, live sampling and interactive technology. The last album Appjenou! was issued in the form of an app for mobile phones .
From an interview with him by Tim Sprangers in 2011: ” Recently we’ve made a new piece with cows. That’s fun, but then it is still quite difficult to get the musical phrasing right. Well anyway that cow sounds good, it is certainly something very different from a composition conceived from chords . “
” I think you have to resort to what is closest to your state. And in my case that’s classical music and hip hop. Of course you improvise a lot in jazz, but what I find strange is that it is expected that only there creativity can occur. Within the musical language of jazz I think Bach was a great improviser, otherwise he would never have created such beautiful music. That’s why I want to look around the corners of jazz. I also like to create music from non – musical elements , which is something that fascinates me my whole life . With sounds from outside. You find out that you can make music with everything … samples electronics, multimedia (visuals, dance), good marketing, humor, putting things into perspective … ”
Tony Roe studied classical piano at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, jazz piano at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and music technology at the HKU. He also studied at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at TU Delft. In New York he studied with likeminded musicians Jason Moran, Jean -Michel Pilc and Ari Hoenig.
