Een volwassen geluid en mooie noten
Altsaxofonist Maarten Hogenhuis won afgelopen weekend tijdens Jazz in Duketown in Den Bosch de Conservatorium Talent Award 2014.
De meest gehoorde opmerking: hè – zit Maarten nog op het Conservatorium? Ja – dat wil zeggen – hij studeert deze maand af aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Hogenhuis is een groot nieuw talent op altsax in Nederland sinds de laatste 2 jaar.
De jury in Den Bosch prees hem om zijn techniek en mooie geluid op zijn altsax, maar vooral ook omdat hij liet horen dat hij ‘boven de materie staat’. Daarmee bedoelend, dat het niet klinkt of hij erg bezig is met techniek of moeilijke noten, maar dat hij ‘gewoon’ muziek maakt.
Hogenhuis zegt zelf, dat hij niet speciaal iets nieuws pretendeert toe te voegen aan de jazztraditie. ‘Alles is al zo goed gedaan door musici als Coltrane of Parker; ik blijf maar liever bij mezelf’. Hogenhuis heeft een heel volwassen geluid op zijn alt en beschikt over veel techniek. In zijn bands laat hij horen dat bebop en hardbop nog steeds léven – ook voor nieuwe generaties jazzmusici.

Op 8 augustus speelt hij met zijn trio in Felix Meritis, Amsterdam, een concert dat deel uitmaakt van een serie avontuurlijke zomerconcerten in Felix & Foam, gehost door het Bimhuis.
Hogenhuis is niet het enige jonge jazztalent dat in de Nederlandse scene hard opstoomt: gitarist Reinier Baas is nog zo iemand, basklarinettist Joris Roelofs, altsaxofonist Ben van Gelder en pianist Gideon van Gelder – om er eens een paar te noemen. Van dezelfde generatie twintigers – ze kennen elkaar dan ook allemaal en werken vaak samen.
Met zijn trio won Hogenhuis in 2013 de Keep an Eye Jazz Award voor beste solist én band. Ook was hij winnaar ‘Beste Solist’ van de Dutch Jazz Competition 2012

A mature sound and beautiful music
Alto saxophonist Maarten Hogenhuis has won the Conservatory Talent Award 2014 last weekend at Jazz in Duke Town in Den Bosch. The most common remark: huh – Maarten is still at the Conservatory? Yes – that is to say – he graduates from the Conservatory of Amsterdam this month.
Hogenhuis is a great new talent on alto saxophone in the Netherlands since the last 2 years.
The jury in Den Bosch praised him for his technique and beautiful sound on his alto saxophone, but also because he stands ‘above the material’. Meaning that it does not sounds like he is very concerned with technique or musical difficulties, but he’s ‘just’ making music.
Hogenhuis himself says that he does not pretend to add something new to the jazz tradition. “Everything has been done so well by musicians like Coltrane or Parker; I prefer to stay close to myself. Hogenhuis has a very mature sound on his alto and has a lot of technique. In his bands he shows that bebop and hard bop still live – even for new generations of jazz musicians.
On August 8, he plays with his trio in Felix Meritis, Amsterdam, a concert that is part of a series of adventurous summer concerts in Felix & Foam, hosted by the Bimhuis.
Hogenhuis is not the only young upcoming jazz talent in the Dutch scene; also guitarist Reinier Baas, bassclarinet-player Joris Roelofs, alto saxophonist Ben van Gelder and pianist Gideon van Gelder – to name just a few. All the same generation twentysomethings – they all know each other and often work together.
With his trio Hogenhuis won the Keep an Eye Jazz Award in 2013 for best soloist and band. He was also winner ‘Best Soloist’ by the Dutch Jazz Competition 2012.
