Bimhuis 40 jaar (1)

KAJA DRAKSLER SOLO | DUO BENJAMIN HERMAN/ANTON GOUDSMIT | TAKSIM TRIO

Benjamin Herman en Anton Goudsmit speelden jaren samen in New Cool Collective.

JOE MORRIS SOLO.

The worldwide renowned and beloved Bimhuis jazz-venue turns forty this year. There will be a range of activities and special events during the season. Starting with a 5 day Kick Off Weekend. Due to its length, this blog has been divided into two parts. This is Part 1, with the program of 1 and 2nd October. HERE is Part 2 of the program of 3, 4 and 5th October.
1974 now seems very far away, but those who were there, haven’t forgotten the details. The Bimhuis opened in 1974 after a lengthy search for a suitable venue by improvising musicians united in the BIM. The Bimhuis soon developed to become the most important jazz institution in the Netherlands, not only as a venue but also as a meeting place for the Dutch and international jazz scene. Programmed in all those years by artistic director Huub van Riel. And The Rest is History, you might say. It has now grown to become regarded by professionals as one of the best music rooms in the world.

Why is this jazz venue so appreciated by audiences and also by jazz musicians worldwide?
What you can find there is good jazz from all around the world; personal music, which cannot be pinned down to one style; big names from abroad; talented Dutch musicians young and old;  experiment, improvisation; music being made on the spot.
1 OCTOBER
KAJA Draksler SOLO | DUO BENJAMIN HERMAN / ANTON GOUDSMIT | TAKSIM TRIO
Kaja Draksler is both classical composer and jazz pianist. She makes exciting, powerful free improvisation, and then also can be subtly. She works in the transition area between improvisation and contemporary composition. Furthermore, she became fascinated by improvising pianist Cecil Taylor. Wantin to know why his free improvisations give the impression to be very structured. The result is very personal music. And that is exactly what the Bimhuis stands for. Kaja already won a few awards, and last year she made a solo album.

Benjamin Herman and Anton Goudsmit played together for years in New Cool Collective. With great success each went his own way as a bandleader, the saxophonist in his Benjamin Herman Trio and Quartet, and guitarist in The Ploctones. Now they play together again as a duo.

After 5 years, the acclaimed Taksim Trio finally is back again at the Bimhuis. These are three famous virtuosos of Turkish music, playing breathtaking ’taksims. Improvisations in which folk, blues, raga and classical meet.
