Het Bimhuis bestaat 40 jaar! Dat wordt het hele seizoen uitgebreid gevierd. Te beginnen met een Kick Off Weekend dat 5 dagen duurt. Vanwege de lengte is dit blog is in 2 delen opgeknipt. Eerst is er een KICK-OFF weekend dat 5 dagen duurt, met een heleboel concerten met verschillende soorten jazz & impro, belangrijke representanten en spannende projecten.

DAVID KWEKSILBER BIGBAND (Bimhuis at Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ)
Nederland heeft een internationale reputatie op het gebied van zowel hedendaagse muziek (ensembles én componisten), als geïmproviseerde muziek.
De David Kweksilber Big Band brengt musici uit beide disciplines samen.
Zelf noemt rietblazer Kweksilber het ‘Ultieme muziek van het Moment’
. Al sinds de oprichting inspireert deze big band componisten uit de meest uiteenlopende muzikale richtingen om speciaal voor de band nieuwe muziek te schrijven.
De band heeft een verpletterende sound die ook fluisterzacht kan zijn, en speelt al die nieuwe muziek met een enorme energie.
BALKAN CLARINET SUMMIT
Balkan Clarinet Summit, met zes klarinettisten uit zes verschillende landen: Roemenië, Servië, Turkije, Italië, Duitsland en Griekenland. Ze spelen alles van jazz en folk tot klassiek, van verstild en melancholisch tot vrolijk en uitbundig. Met hierin Stavros Pazarentsis – klarino, Sergiu Balutel, Slobodan Trkulja – klarinet, Oguz Büyükberber – basklarinet, Claudio Puntin – es-/bes-/alt-/basklarinet, Steffen Schorn – contra-altklarinet

AMSTERDAM REAL BOOK is een initiatief van Stichting dOeK (een organisatie die zich op allerlei manieren bezighoudt met improvisatiemuziek) . Het begon als een project om een brug te slaan tussen oude en nieuwe improvisatoren in Amsterdam.
Veel Amsterdamse improvisatoren zijn beroemd over de hele wereld vanwege hun baanbrekende manier van omgaan met jazz ( Breuker, Mengelberg, Bennink eva). Het resulteerde o.a. in het Amsterdam Real Book, waarin composities zijn opgenomen die de afgelopen decennia de geschiedenis en taal van de ‘gecomproviseerde’ muziek in Amsterdam hebben gevormd. Repertoire van o.a. Misha Mengelberg, Sean Bergin, Theo Loevendie, Michael Moore, Willem Breuker, Leo Cuypers, Guus Janssen, Ab Baars.
Vanavond speelt een selectie musici hoogtepunten uit dit repertoire, van variété tot Zuid-Afrikaanse kwela, van virtuoze bebop tot punk en van Misha Mengelberg tot The Ex.

Noorse jazzmusici hoef je niks wijs te maken als het gaat over een eigen manier van de dingen aanpakken.
Håkon Kornstad is een tenorsaxofonist én tenorzanger, opera zanger.
Hij brak internationaal door als saxofonist, en besloot daarna opera te gaan zingen. Dat bleek hij ook heel goed te kunnen. Håkon Kornstad verrast iedereen, inclusief zichzelf, met zijn dubbeltalent.
Hij gaat vanavond solo spelen, waarbij hij improviseert met sax, operazang en elektronische loops. Het is dus een soort eenmans-‘tenor battle’.
WAYNE HORVITZ EUROPEAN ORCHESTRA
Bekende namen uit de Europese jazz-avant-garde verenigen zich onder de bezielende leiding van Wayne Horvitz, sleutelfiguur uit de downtown-scene van New York. De pianist en componist woont tegenwoordig in Seattle, van waaruit hij voor sensatie zorgt met de elektrische jazzfunk van zijn band Zony Mash. ‘Horvitz writes melodies that creep into memory and refuse to leave’ (The Wire).

Groovy Hammond jazz
. De Amerikaanse organist Joey DeFrancesco is de waardige opvolger van Jimmy Smith als ambassadeur van het hammond-orgel in de jazz; net als zijn leermeester haalt hij voortdurend de eerste plaats in de Downbeat Critics Polls. Op zijn zeventiende dook hij al de studio in met Miles Davis en sindsdien werkte hij samen met o.a. John McLaughlin en Ray Charles. In zijn huidige trio speelt hij met gitarist Jeff Parker (o.a. Tortoise) en drummer George Fludas, beiden uit Chicago.
Het hele seizoen zijn er speciale projecten in het Bimhuis:
*CITY LINKS, een uitwisselingsporject
* Bimhuis Radio: een nieuw internet radiostation waar 40 concerten live worden gestreamd. Achteraf zullen die concerten ook on demand terug te horen zijn.
* Er worden nieuwe cd’s uitgebracht op het Bimhuis label en video-portretten gemaakt van prominente Nederl. jazzmusici
* er komt Bimbier en Bimwijn!

The worldwide renowned and beloved Bimhuis jazz-venue turns forty this year. This anniversary is celebrated, starting with a KICK-OFF weekend that lasts five days, with a lot of concerts with different types of jazz and improvisation, important representatives and exciting projects.

David Kweksilber BIGBAND (at Muziekgbouw aan ’t IJ)
The Netherlands have an international reputation in the field of both contemporary music (ensembles and composers), and improvised music. David Kweksilber Big Band brings together musicians from both disciplines. Reed player Kweksilber himself calls the “ultimate music of the moment.” Ever since the band started in 2008, it inspires composers of the most diverse musical directions to write new music especially for the band. The band has an overwhelming sound, but can play whisperingly soft as well. It has been playing the new music with tremendous energy.
BALKAN SUMMIT CLARINET
Balkan Clarinet Summit are six clarinet players from six different countries: Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Italy, Germany and Greece. They play from jazz and folk to classical, from hushed and melancholy to exuberant. AMSTERDAM REAL BOOK is an initiative of dOeK Foundation (an organization that is involved in improvised music). It started as a project to bridge the gap between old and new improvisers in Amsterdam. Many Amsterdam improvisers are famous throughout the world for their groundbreaking way of dealing with jazz (Breuker, Mengelberg, Bennink eva). It resulted among others in the Amsterdam Real Book, where compositions are included from the last decades in which the specific Amsterdam-improvisation history and language have been formed. Names such as Misha Mengelberg, Sean Bergin, Loevendie, Michael Moore, Willem Breuker, Leo Cuypers, Guus Janssen, Ab Baars. Tonight musicians play a selection of highlights from this repertoire, from vaudeville to South African kwela, virtuoso bebop to punk and Misha Mengelberg to The Ex. Wayne Horvitz EUROPEAN ORCHESTRA
Famous musicians from the European jazz avant-garde unite under the inspiring leadership of Wayne Horvitz, a key figure in the downtown scene of New York. The pianist and composer now lives in Seattle, where he created a sensation with the electric jazz funk of his band Zony Mash. “Horvitz writes melodies That creep into memory and refuse to leave” (The Wire).

Guus Janssen – piano and John English – drums play as a duo. Engels is the ‘grand old man‘ Dutch jazz-swing drummer. Janssen is pianist / composer and a representative of the angular and stubborn Dutch swing.

Joey DeFrancesco Trio
Groovy Hammond jazz. The American organist Joey DeFrancesco is the successor to Jimmy Smith as ambassador of the Hammond organ in jazz. Like his mentor, he keeps on taking the first place in the Downbeat Critics Polls. At seventeen, he already popped into the studio with Miles Davis, and since then he has worked with the likes of John McLaughlin and Ray Charles. In his current trio he plays with guitarist Jeff Parker (Tortoise, among others) and drummer George Fludas, both from Chicago.
