Je herkent zijn geluid altijd direct. Bill Frisell is een van de bekendste èn herkenbare jazzgitaristen. Toonaangevend sinds het einde van de jaren tachtig. Een pionier die folk, Americana, rock, blues, jazz en countryinvloeden in zijn spel gebruikt en daarmee een unieke eigen stijl heeft gecreëerd.
Met zijn nieuwe project Guitar In The Space Age uit 2014 verkent hij de populaire instrumentale muziek uit de naoorlogse periode. Frisell brengt daarmee een ode aan de liedjes die het legendarische Okeh Records in de jaren zestig uitbracht. Dat was de tijd dat zijn favoriete gitaar – de Fender Telecaster – op de markt kwam.

Er zit vaak een zekere melancholie in Frisells muziek; de timing is lay-back, er zijn mooie melodieën en thema’s, en er is geen noot teveel. Country en Americana komen voor in zijn muziek, maar ook blues en jazz uit het Amerikaanse Songbook, en popliedjes, bijvoorbeeld van The Beatles en John Lennon.
Op een of andere manier ademt zijn muziek vaak rust; je ziet door de filmische muziek als het ware de weidse landschappen voor je.
Bill Frisell, die opgroeide in Denver, wilde aanvankelijk klassiek musicus worden, maar na een overstap van de klarinet naar gitaar verloor hij zijn hart aan de vrijheid en swing van de jazzscene. De 63-jarige Grammy-winnaar stond al meerdere keren op North Sea Jazz.
In de jaren ‘80 stond Frisell vooral bekend als een experimentalist aan de zijde van John Zorn. Daarna keerde hij steeds vaker terug naar zijn wortels: bluegrass en country. In 2011 maakte hij het album All We Are Saying met interpretaties van songs van John Lennon.
In de meer dan 25 jaar dat Bill Frisell actief is speelde hij op meer dan 200 platen, waarvan ongeveer 30 onder zijn eigen naam. Hij werkte samen met veel toonaangevende musici waaronder John Zorn en Elvis Costello. Bill Frisell is een van de meest toonaangevende jazzgitaristen sinds de jaren 80. Hij maakte een eclectische vorm van jazz, pop/rock, blues, country, bluegrass, en klassieke muziek. Een van de kenmerken van Frisell’s gitaarspel is het gebruik van effectpedalen.
Een paar van zijn ensembles zijn het 858 Quartet (oorspronkelijk opgericht door inspiratie van 8 schilderijen van de Duitse schilder Gerhard Richter) (Gerhard Richter paintings (858, 1-8). Bill Frisell’s John Lennon Tribute Band; trio met drummer Kenny Wolleson en bassist/gitarist Tony Scherr. Frisell speelde ook veel met drummer Joey Baron en verder met o.a. John Scofield, Vernon Reid, Wayne Horvitz, Paul Bley, Ronald Shannon Jackson en vele anderen. Hij maakte ook veel filmmuziek.

You always recognize his sound immediatly. Bill Frisell is one of the most famous and recognizable jazz guitarists. Leading the way since the end of the eighties. A pioneer using folk, Americana, rock, blues, jazz and country influences in his game and thus created a unique style.
With his new project Guitar In The Space Age (2014), he explores the popular instrumental music of the postwar period. Frisell brings an ode to the songs which were released by the legendary Okeh Records in the Sixties. That was the time that his favorite guitar – the Fender Telecaster – came on the market.

There is often a certain melancholy in Frisells music; the timing is layback, there are beautiful melodies and themes, and there is no note to many. Country and Americana can be found in his music but also blues and jazz from the American Songbook and pop songs such as the Beatles and John Lennon. Somehow his music often breathes tranquility; through the cinematic music you see as it were the sweeping landscapes before your eyes.
Bill Frisell, who grew up in Denver, wanted to be a classical musician, but after a switch from clarinet to guitar he lost his heart to the freedom of jazz and swing. The 63-year-old Grammy winner already played several times at the North Sea Jazz Festival.
In the 80s, Frisell was primarily known as an experimentalist at the side of John Zorn. Then he increasingly often returned to his roots: bluegrass and country.

He worked with many leading musicians including John Zorn and Elvis Costello. One of the features of Frisell’s guitar playing is the use of effects pedals.
