ENGLISH
An open mind with exuberant imagination

The musical range in which pianist Alexander Hawkins moves is very great: he plays Ethio-Jazz with Mulatu Astatke, South African jazz with Louis Moholo-Moholo to free jazz with his own Hammond trio and hardcore improv with Han Bennink.
Hawkins seems to be one of the great promises of British jazz. Someone with an open mind; he is self-taught and integrates both free improvisation and composition in his music. The pieces he writes for his own ensembles demonstrate structures and composition within improvisation.

Hawkins combines advanced technology with an exuberant imagination. In addition, he is one of the very few (or the only one?) Hammond organists who play free jazz and improv on the instrument!
Bimhuis gave Alexander Hawkins Carte Blanche for an evening concert. He will play new compositions with his ensemble from London, for the occasion supplemented by Amsterdam contemporaries.
