Straight ahead postbop

Al meer dan 50 jaar drumt Louis Hayes energiek en met onverbiddelijke swing straight ahead postbop en moderne jazz. Hij is zelf een van de ‘uitvinders’ van postbop* en een van die jazzmusici die met succes veranderingen in jazz hebben vormgegeven.
Hayes is 80 jaar oud en heeft onwaarschijnlijk veel jazz ervaring; hij zou makkelijk op zijn lauweren kunnen rusten. Maar zover is het nog niet!

Hij viert dit jaar zijn 80ste verjaardag met een ijzersterk kwartet met Jeremy Pelt op trompet, Danny Grissett – piano en Dezron Douglas – bas. Op 18-2 in het Bimhuis in Amsterdam.

Louis Hayes had en heeft een duizelingwekkende loopbaan en een carrière vol hoogtepunten als drummer bij de allergrootsten in de jazz, waaronder John Coltrane, Horace Silver, Cannonball Adderley, Oscar Peterson.

Hij begon zijn professionele carrière bij saxofonist/fluitist/hoboïst Yusef Lateef en kwam daarna terecht in bands van pianist Horace Silver, saxofonist Cannonball Adderley en pianist Oscar Peterson.

Hij is te horen op ontelbaar veel albums, met oa John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Jackie McLean, Wes Montgomery, Cedar Walton, Dexter Gordon, Woody Shaw, George Benson, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner e.a.
De laatste decennia leidt hij zijn eigen bands, zoals The Cannonball Legacy Band (met ao Jeremy Pelt – trompet en Vincent Herring – sax) en The Jazz Communicators.

* Postbop is een eclectische jazzstijl met invloeden uit bebop, hardbop, avant-garde, free jazz. De stijl kwam op vanaf het midden van de jaren 60 met musici als John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Charles Mingus, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock. 
In postbop zijn het vaak kleine combo’s die spelen.
Modale jazz is waarschijnlijk het belangrijkste nieuwe element dat geïntroduceerd werd in deze stijl. Er wordt geïmproviseerd over een modus, in plaats van over een schema met veel akkoorden. De bekendste compositie in deze stijl is So What van Miles Davis, waar maar twee verschillende akkoorden gebruikt worden in een schema van 32 maten.

For more than 50 years now drummer Louis Hayes plays straight ahead postbop and modern jazz with an energetic and unrelenting swing.
He himself is one of the inventors of postbop* and one of those musicians who have shaped changes in jazz successfully.
Hayes has an unbelievable wealth of experience in jazz; he could easily rest on his laurels.
But he doesn’t, not yet!

Louis Hayes had and still has a dazzling career full of highlights as drummer with the greatests in jazz, such as John Coltrane, Horace Silver, Cannonball Adderley, Oscar Peterson.

He started his professional career with saxophonist/flutist/oboist Yusef Lateef and then moved on to the bands of pianist Horace Silver, saxophonist Cannonball Adderley and pianist Oscar Peterson.
He can be heard on countless albums with John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Jackie McLean, Wes Montgomery, Cedar Walton, Dexter Gordon, Woody Shaw, George Benson, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner and so on. 
The last decades he has led his own bands, such as The Cannonball Legacy Band (with ao Jeremy Pelt – trumpet and Vincent Herring – sax) and The Jazz Communicators.

* The Postbop jazz style is eclectic with influences from bebop, hard bop, avant-garde, free jazz. The styl camu up from the mid-60s with musicians like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Charles Mingus, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock. In postbop it’s often small combos playing.
Modal jazz is probably the most important new element that was introduced into this style. Improvisations are being played in a mode, instead of chord progressions. The most famous composition in this style is So What by Miles Davis, where only two different chords are used in a 32 bar theme .
