Artvark Sax Quartet & Binkbeats & 155

‘Trance’ is hun zesde album.

ENGLISH
Artvark Saxophone Quartet has a great track record.

In the (almost) 13 years of their existence they have shown that they are a great sax quartet. But also that in their collaborations with musicians from outside jazz, they can create new music in which the whole is much more than the sum of the parts.

Less than six months after the release of their latest album Trance, there is now a new project on stage that combines Artvark sax-music with electronic music and breakdance: Pulse. A visual and musical theater performance by Artvark with Breakdance DJ/VJ Collective 155 and producer and percussionist Frank Wienk (BinkBeats).
Artvark and Binkbeats created a new repertoire in which the saxes are allowed to deform and the band members will do everything they can to allow the dancers of 155 to spontaneously move to the sounds.

Frank Wienk is percussionist and marimba player with ao Slagwerk Den Haag, and Kyteman Orchestra. But he became known on YouTube as sound artist and sampler-king Binkbeats, initially with covers of Flying Lotus and Aphex Twin. He also works with Niels Broos, known as a keyboard player of Kyteman and with producer Jameszoo.

155 (one-five-five) is a creative dance group with a shared passion for new movement forms, music, bizarre humor and art. Originating from breakdance group iLL Skill Squad from Wageningen, they have become a dance collective that makes theater performances by combining dance, video and comedy in a unique way. Their debut in the theater world was the performance ‘155’, made under the wings of DOX. They played with great success at Lowlands and other places.

Rolf Delfos – alto and soprano sax, Bart Wirtz – alto sax,  Miguel Boelens (replacing Mete Erker in this project) – tenor sax, Peter Broekhuizen – baritone sax. Erik Bos – choreography, dance, Rein Luuring – animation, dance, Jakob Witte – scenery, dance, Thomas Bos – video, dance

Artvark Saxophone Quartet is a tight ensemble. The four saxophonists are committed consistently to create one group-sound. It is exactly that and group dynamics they find important, more then individual soloos.
The saxophones play varying roles; in turn they all play melody, guide, bass rhythm, solo. Just like a classical string quartet.
To sound as a thight unit they need to pay close attention to each other, listen to each other, and feel each other. That is why they always play everything by heart – no sheet music! Because the four horns respond to each other so well, the songs all run smoothly. Modern jazz, blues, chamber jazz, groove – Artvark masters it all. And very well too.
The quartet made its first CD in 2005. ‘Trance’ is their sixth album. again with only his own work and with the subtitle: a symphonic poem for four pigs.
After their Afro-jazz project with Ntjam Rosie, the children’s performance ‘Bosch in bed’ and their project with Claron McFadden and Jörg Brinkmann, the ensemble decided to go back to the basis of the acoustic saxophone quartet.

Artvark made theater concerts in the direction of the blues (with John Buijsman), classical (with Claron McFadden) and soul / jazz (with Ntjam Rosie).
