International Jazz Festival Middelburg 2015

Jazzfestival Middelburg: scherp & actueel
Jazzfestival Middelburg

Chris Illingworth – piano, Nick Blacka – bas, Rob Turner – drums

Bill Evans’ “Soulgrass”, feat. Murali Coryell
          23-5     21:30
Americana-meets-Soul-meets-Jazz/Blues

Guillaume Perret &  The Electric Epic
     25-5    15:00
Barokke metalrock, electro-funk, jazzrock, spacejazz.

ENGLISH
Fans of jazz & festivals are lucky to find several at Pentecost every year: Jazz in Duke Town in Den Bosch, Music Meeting in Nijmegen; Moers Festival (just over the German border). And the International Jazz Festival Middelburg: a small but fine event with 11 bands on an outdoor stage on the big Abdijplein. At this festival you do not select concerts; if you want you can see them all! This year, the 9th edition on 23, 24 and 25th of May.
With no more than 11 acts, the festival programming has to make bold choices in which contemporary jazz, improvisation, world, soul and fusion from home and abroad still all have to be covered. Here’s what’s to be expected: Americana-meets-soul-meets-jazz / blues from saxophonist Bill Evans; world jazz with the impressive voice of singer Dhafer Youssef; the grooves of New Cool Collective; rapper Typhoon; modern creative jazz pianist Gideon van Gelder. Next to this crazy fusion of Guillaume Perret; turbo piano jazz of the British GoGo Penguin; complex virtuosity of the Steve Lehman Octet and the wayward big band jazz of the New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra with guitarist Reinier Baas. Buma Boy Edgar Prize winner Jeroen van Vliet will perform his Zealand Suite. In this blog 5 highlights

Zeeland Suite 2014 Jeroen van Vliet        23-5         17:45
Watch the original version from 1977 in the 1st video. You can see how nicely crazy when everyone was back then 😉
In 1977 Jeugd en Muziek Zeeland commissioned pianist Leo Cuypers to compose the Zeeland Suite. The performances and recordings from it made a milestone in the Dutch history of jazz and improvised music. Accessible melodious jazz compositions in combination with wild free improvisations with icons like Willem Breuker, Martin van Duynhoven, Willem van Manen and Arjen Gorter. Performed in the mighty Zeeland landscape.
37 years later, the Foundation Muziekpodium Zealand asked pianist Jeroen van Vliet – winner of the Buma Boy Edgar Prize 2014 – to compose a new version of the Zeeland Suite. This New Zeeland Suite was carried out at six locations in Zeeland in the first weekend of September 2014, recorded and filmed. From now on the suite goes on tour. Jeroen van Vliet (piano, composition), Anton Goudsmit (guitar), Mete Erker and Joris Posthumus (saxophones), Joris Roelofs (clarinets), Frans van der Hoeven (bass) and Pascal Vermeer (drums)

Gogo Penguin      23-5      19:30
turbo piano jazz
Gogo-PenguinYoung Gogo Penguin piano trio from Manchester is the British answer to trios like The Bad Plus and E.S.T. By this is meant, that the instruments are equivalent to each other and may switch rols regularly. There is no situation like pianist-plays-solo with a subserviant rhythm section of bass and drums. Influences from pop and rock (Aphex Twin and Massive Attack), classical music (Debussy) and electronic music find their way into this jazz. Live they make this happen with intense played music. Chris Illingworth – piano, Nick Blacka – bass, Rob Turner – drums

Bill Evans Soulgrass feat. Murali Coryell           23-5     21:30
Americana-meets-soul-meets-Jazz / Blues
Bill Evans’ newest band “Soul Grass” brings an original combination of jazz, funk, blues and bluegrass & rhytmn. All band members also act as vocalists; Evans himself, but also Corryell Murali, son of guitarist Larry Corryel.
Bill Evans (saxophones, keyboards, vocals), Murali Coryell & Mitch Stein (guitars, vocals), Dave Anderson (bass guitar, vocals) and Josh Dion (drums, vocals)
Saxophonist Bill Evans was 22 when he went to play with Miles Davis in 1980. He stayed there for four years, made four world tours and played on six albums. After this period he played with the Mahavishu Orchestra, Herbie Hancock, Steps Ahead and even with Mick Jagger. Since 1990, Bill Evans mostly worked with his own bands; released more than 20 albums and received several Grammys. Evans thereby exceeded the boundaries of traditional jazz in all directions (rock, rhytmn & blues, hip hop, fusion, funk and soul). In 2012 Bill Evans also played at the International Jazz Festival Middelburg togehter with guitarist Mike Stern .

Dhafer Youssef    24-5         21:30
World jazz with an impressive voice
Dhafer Youssef – ud player and singer- is originally from Tunesia, but has been living in Paris and Vienna for a while now. The most striking in his style is the enormously high singing; his voice has a very wide range. He mixes traditional music with western music he heard on the radio in Tunisia. His music comes from the mystical Sufi tradition but is influenced by various other genres such as jazz, electronic music and rock. At a young age a carte blanche was given to nim from the jazz club Porgy and Bess in Vienna, they suggested him to play with European musicians. He got his first fame through this, which resulted in an invitation from the Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer and keyboardist Bugge Wesseltoft. From the time he worked in Europe, he distinguished himself by his exceptional vocal style, his poetic play and the use of electronics. Youssef released several albums and won the prestigious BBC World Music Award. Nowadays he usually performs with a jazz cast. Dhafer Youssef (old, vocals), Kristjan Randalu (piano), Phil Donkin (bass) and Ferenc Nemeth (drums)

Guillaume Perret &  The Electric Epic       25-5 15:00
Baroque metal rock, electro-funk, jazz, rock, spacejazz. Such is the combination that’s brought out by the French saxophonist Guillaume Perret. Many reverb and other effects on the tenor saxophone; a heavy rock sound of the guitar; power and pounding drums. It’s just a quartet, but it sounds massive, huge. It is played with brutal energy and a lot of decibels!
Guillaume Perret (tenor saxophone, electronics), Jim Grandcamp (guitar), Phil Bussonnet (bass guitar) and Yoann Serra (drums).

International Jazz Festival Middelburg is realized in cooperation with Muziekpodium Zealand.
