CD Living Here, Hermine Deurloo/Rembrandt Frerichs/Jörg Brinkmann/Jim Black.
Mooi gedoseerde kamerjazz

Eerdere cd’s zijn o.a. Crazy Clock (2005), opgenomen in New York met producer/gitarist/zanger Tony Scherr.

Well balanced chamber jazz

CD Living Here, Hermine Deurloo/Rembrandt Frerichs/Jörg Brinkmann/Jim Black (ZENNEZ records)

The sound of the harmonica always involves a bit of musical melancholy, but the pieces on the new album by Hermine Deurloo are different in style and tone. Wistful ballads, melodic but also very rhythmic compositions, hectic jazz, brazilian. (Almost all of them written by Deurloo or Frerichs).
As on Deurloo’s previous album Welling (with Zapp4 string quartet) also here it’s about transparent, open chamber jazz, light and elegant.

The title of the CD Living Here is referring to Amsterdam, the city where Hermine Deurloo was born and raised and that she loves very much (witness for example the Amsterdam photos she regularly posts on Facebook). The diverse and dynamic nature of city is reflected in the character of the different pieces on the album.
‘Living Here’ is also about making music in the Here and Now, as is of course the case in improvised music.

The line up of this quartet is not really conventional, with a cello (and no bass).
Hermine and Rembrandt act as a duo since 2013. The expansion into a quartet with the two musicians Brinkmann and Black is a very good choice. The music becomes more differentiated.

Cellist Jörg Brinkmann is a master of his instrument; he plays very melodic, improvises freely and inventive, but can also play the role of the bass.
Drummer Jim Black is renowed in the avant-garde jazz scene in New York since the 90s, and played in groups with ao Dave Douglas, Chris Speed and Brad Shepik.
Experimental punk rock and jazz are also part of his repertoire. Special percussion instruments such as bells and bowls and hard crash cymbals are part of his gear; his sound is very distinctive. He is able to play very loud and rocky, but also subtle and subserviant.

Rembrandt Frerichs plays the piano, prepared piano, fortepiano and Indian harmonium. He is well trained in classical music, jazz and music of the Middle East and that is reflected in his playing and in his compositions.
Hermine has proven the chromatic harmonica is a full-fledged solo instrument in jazz for a number of years now. Like Brinkmann and Frerichs she plays very melodic with a precise and personal choice of notes.

Deurloo started on alto saxophone, but taught herself to play the chromatic harmonica after her studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Inspired by Toots Thielemans (occasionally she is said to be the “new Toots” is), she developed an intimate and lyrical sound. She is an in demand sidewoman and guest soloist and toured all over the world with musicians like guitarist Tony Scherr (Bill Frisell, Norah Jones), the Metropole Orchestra, Han Bennink, Willem Breuker Collective, the Schönberg Ensemble, Candy Dulfer and others.

Two years ago she invited Zapp4 string quartet to produce an album together. Named after the Welling café, just behind the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, where sometimes live jazz is being played.
Earlier, in October 2012, her CD “Glass Fish” was released (with Tony Overwater, Jesse van Ruller and Joshua Samson). Previous CDs are ao Crazy Clock (2005), recorded in New York with producer/guitarist/vocalist Tony Scherr. Hermine played all kinds of tunes for movies and television.
Rembrandt Frerichs plays with his own trio, made the fortepiano ‘jazzfähig’ and composes, both in classical music as in jazz and improvisation. For example, for/with violinists Liza Ferschtman and Rosanne Philippens, Holland Baroque, Cello 8tet Amsterdam, harpist Remy van Kesteren, the Osiris Trio, saxophonist Ties Mellema, accordionist Frode Halti, Amstel Saxophone Quartet, Matangi String Quartet, Zapp String Quartet, trumpeter Paolo Fresu (Italy), Trygve Seim (Norrwegen), Norma Winstone (UK).

Cellist Jörg Brinkmann plays ao in groups of Eric Vloeimans and Fanz of Chossy. He can be heard on more than 20 CDs.
