Jeff Ballard

Zijn elektronische geluid smelt samen met het onnavolgbare drumwerk van Ballard, ‘a melodicist and percussive colorist on the kit’ (Downbeat). In Nederland spelen ze nu met gitarist/vocalist Lionel Loueke (Herbie Hancock) en pianist/toetsenist Kevin Hays (Joe Henderson, John Scofield).

Painting with rhythms and sounds somewhere between free improvisation and funk; between acoustic and electric

Jeff Ballard we might know best as drummer in pianist Brad Mehldau’s trio. He played with many, but the last couple of years he’s very active with his own trio and quartet. The musicians in his band Fairgrounds change regularly, but guitarist Lionel Loueke and The Bad Plus-known Reid Anderson (not playing the bass here, but responsible for the electronic sounds) are always present. In this band Ballard plays all kinds of music he loves, which includes in any case rich complex rhythms and surprising harmonies. The music is unpredictable, the cast too.

Jeff Ballard, one of the best drummers of his generation, has been described as a percussionist who paints with rhythms and sounds. His drumming style has many influences – from Africa and South America to Europe and North America. His drum kit is composed of parts that come from all over the world: India, South America, Pakistan and Africa. The snare drum comes from USA; cymbals from Turkey; the bells from Tibet – but also from the state of Maine.
An eclectic mix of everywhere and nowhere.
Ballard played with Pat Metheny, Chick Corea and Ray Charles, and is the regular with drummer Brad Mehldau. He also played in the Joshua Redman Elastic Band. Together with Mark Turner and Larry Grenadier, he founded the band Fly.
Ballard grew up in California with icons such as Count Basie, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. In recent years he has been working with his own trio with alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón and guitarist Lionel Loueke. In 2014’s they released the album Time’s Tales.
In both of his groups musicians from the worldtop of contemporary jazz. Surprisingly, the role of Reid Anderson, best known as the bassist of The Bad Plus, plays no bass in this group, but focuses entirely on computer and controllers. His electronic sound merges with the inimitable drumming Ballard, “a melodicist and percussive colorist on the kit (Downbeat). In the Netherlands, they play with guitarist / vocalist Lionel Loueke (Herbie Hancock) and pianist / keyboardist Kevin Hays (Joe Henderson, John Scofield).
