Northsea Jazz Festival 2016 (1)

English translation below

Jonathan Scales          vrijdag 8-7 Missisippi 22:00
(complete blog HIER)

Shai Maestro        vrijdag  8-7 Yenisei 23:30
Shai Maestro (piano); Jorge Roeder (bas); Ziv Ravitz (drums). (Complete blog HIER)

Mark Schilders         zaterdag 9 -7 Volga, 17:00
(complete blog HIER)

Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet zondag 10-7    Madeira 18:45
Yuri Honing (tenorsax); Wolfert Brederode (piano); Gulli Gudmundsson (bas); Joost Lijbaart (drums).

Cory Henry The Revival & The Funk Apostles
zondag 10-7 Congo 22:00

Andrew Bailie (gitaar); Cory Henry (piano, keyboards, Hammond B3); Nicholas Semrad (keyboards); Sharay Reed (bas); Cleon Edwards (drums); TaRon Lockett (drums, percussie). (complete blog HIER)

Gogo Penguin         zondag 10-7 Darling 21:30
Turbo pianojazz
Chris Illingworth – piano, Nick Blacka – bas, Rob Turner – drums. (Complete blog HIER)

Several NSJ artists have already been featured previously in the past year on this site. They come into view once more, with reference to the complete blogs (for that look in Dutch text above)

Jonathan Scales    Friday 8-7 Mississippi 22:00
Jazzfunk super groove on steel drums.
jonathan scales
Young & new steeldrumsplayer from the USA Jonathan Scales brings funky new life into the steeldrums and toured in Europe for the first time last fall (with four concerts in the Netherlands).

His band Jonathan Scales Fourchestra is like a contemporary jazz trio with steel drums, bass guitar and drums, where the piano is replaced by steel drums. Scales is compared with another innovator of steel drums, Othello Molineaux, who caused a furore in the band of legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius. Jazzy, funky, bluesy with improvisation. Jay White (bass); Xavier Breaker (drums); Jonathan Scales (steel drums).

Shai Maestro      Friday 8-7 Yenisei 23:30
Lyrical and dynamic
Israeli and New York-based pianist Shai Maestro is not even 30 years old and already a few years a much talked about talent. He became best known as the pianist of bassist Avishai Cohen, and in the meantime with his own trio and also as a pianist in the jazz quartet of drummer Mark Giuliana.
In his compositions he mixes jazz with influences from Eastern music, including his homeland. Shai Maestro (piano); Jorge Roeder (bass); Ziv Ravitz (drums).

Mark Schilders     Saturday 9 -7 Volga, 17:00
Amazing music, as you might not expect from a jazz drummer. Mark Schilders takes time to construct pieces. He has a clear way of playing, without claiming the lead for himself. The pieces often start open and inquisitive, in calmness, to culminate eventually in violent noise improv. For November Music 2016 he received a special project with the Antwerp jazz guitarist Bert Cools and cellist Martin Fox.
On NSJ he plays with Bert Cools (guitar, electronics); Bram de Looze (piano); Eric Castel (synthesizers)

Yuri Honing Acoustic Quartet      Sunday 10-7 Madeira 18:45
Less is More on the Yuri Honing album ‘Desire’, where everything is about longing & desire. Compelling melodies and alluring grooves embedded in jazz, pop, classical and ancient music. In some pieces pain can be heard, others are hopeful and dreamy and sometimes it even sounds calm and peaceful.
Yuri Honing (tenor saxophone); Wolfert Brederode (piano); Gulli Gudmundsson (bass); Joost Lijbaart (drums).

Cory Henry The Revival & The Funk Apostles
Sunday 10-7 Congo 22:00

Organist and keyboardist Cory Henry is best known for Snarky Puppy, the most successful funk-soul-jazz band in ages. On NSJ he plays with his duo The Revival and his band The Funk Apostles. The Revival is particularly soulful gospelfunk jazz, reminiscent of the legendary Hammond Player Jimmy Smith. Henry draws from the rich heritage of gospel and other inspirational music. And he can, because he’s been playing Hammond since his early childhood.
Andrew Bailie (guitar); Cory Henry (piano, keyboards, Hammond B3); Nicholas Semrad (keyboards); Sharay Reed (bass); Cleon Edwards (drums); Taron Lockett (drums, percusse).

Gogo Penguin      Sunday 10-7 Darling 21:30
Turbo piano jazz
Young piano trio Gogo Penguin from Manchester is the British answer to trios as The Bad Plus and E.S.T. The instruments are equivalent to each other and regularly exchange roles. There are influences from pop and rock (Aphex Twin and Massive Attack), classical music (Debussy) and electronic music are finding their way into the jazz. Live they achieve this with intense played music. An acoustic approach to jazz, trip-hop and dance. Chris Illingworth – piano, Nick Blacka – bass, Rob Turner – drums

Van Binsbergen Playstation      Sunday 10-7 Madeira 22:00
The latest band of guitarist Corrie van Binsbergen makes catchy eclectic music, on which it’s hard (once again) to stick a label. Sometimes dynamic, sometimes charming, beautiful, pleasant, sometimes open, sometimes a little vague, but always playful and convincing.
VANBINSBERGEN PLAYSTATION is an 8-man band with four horns, who sound great in  beautifully written arrangements. But then they all are great hornplayers: reed players Mete Erker and Miguel Boelens and brasssection Morris Kliphuisand Joost Buis master their instrument and are able to really blend.
Mete Erker (bass clarinet, tenor saxophone); Miguel Boelens (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); Joost Buis (trombone, lap steel); Morris Kliphuis (french horn, cornet); Corrie van Binsbergen (guitar); Albert van Veenendaal (piano); Dion Nijland (double bass); Yonga Sun (drums).
