Mark Schilders/ICP Orchestra

’In New York wordt juist heel veel samengespeeld. Daar zit toch schoonheid in?’

‘These musicians can swing like mad when they want to, and can play the most sensitive café ballad at the drop of a hat. They also compose their own fantastic repertoire’, aldus trompettist Dave Douglas.

A doubleblog this time about two Dutch  jazz & improv releases: Fabrik of Mark Schilders en Restless in Pieces, ICP Orchestra

Typical, peculiar music, as you maybe wouldn’t not expect from a jazz drummer. Drummer Mark Schilders takes the time to construct his pieces. He has a clear way of playing, but the percussion doesn’t claim the lead itself. The pieces often begin open and investigative, to eventually culminate in violent noise improv. There are not always immediately obvious beats, but spatial soundscapes and sometimes hushed, cinematic atmosphere. On the other hand, Mark Schilders is very good at good solid pop-rock beats. Transparent and clear; he’s never engaged in too many fast drum breaks.
Partly because of the sometimes spacy or distorted guitar sound of Jesse van Ruller the music sounds a bit like country rock sometimes (the good category).

At the invitation of Stichting Jazz International Rotterdam Mark Schilders in 2014 was given an assigment for The Pack Project, a new initiative to encourage young jazz talent. New compositions by the pack leader is the starting point.
As part of the 2-year processthe creator has to go through three phases: composing, performing, recording.
For his Pack he askes guitarist Jesse van Ruller, bassist Clemens van der Feen and Belgian pianist Bram De Looze. The CD Fabrik, released this week, is the final result. The band of his Pack Project is palying on the album, but also in some pieces other musicians join in.

In 2011 Mark Schilders won the Erasmus Jazz Prize; he is a much sought after musician in the Netherlands and abroad. He lived and playd in New York, but resides in Rotterdam again, palying in the Netherlands frequently, for example as a member of bands like New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra and Reinier Baas.

In New York he studied with musical heavyweights as drummer Amir Ziv, Jim Black and bassists Reggie Workman and Ben Street. This year he receives a special assigment for festival November Music with the Antwerp jazz guitarist Bert Cools and cellist Maarten Vos.

Life as a jazz musician in New York is difficult, but Mark Schilders sees the advantages:
“In New York you just play a lot together. Jazz musicians meet at home in their living room for sessions. Usually just during the day; no one is bothered by the noise then because everyone is at work. There I experienced my finest musical hour. Magical moments. You play with all kinds of good musicians the most enchanting jazz. Without an audience, nobody hears it. There is beauty in that, isn’t it? “

Mark Schilders played with Reinier Baas, Jeroen van Vliet, Randal, The New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, Stefan Lievestro, Anton Goudsmit, Ernst Reijseger, Ben van Gelder, Jason Lindner, Gregory Porter, Jesse van Ruller, Lars Dietrich, Doug Weiss, Tineke Postma, Joris Roelofs, Harmen Fraanje, Marzio Scholten, Ruben Hein, Wouter Hamel, Benjamin Herman, Jasper Blom, Ernst Reijseger and countless others. Composition he studied with, among others Martin Fondse and Jim Black.

CD Restless in Pieces of ICP Instant Composers Pool (via toondist.ml)

‘Restless in Pieces’ is the latest CD of the ICP Orchestra, which has been in existence for almost 50 years now. The productive band still plays a lot and also regularly releases new albums. The music is still full of surprises, unexpected twists and eruptions. Like no other, the musicians are able to turn all musical arrangements to theri own special creation. On the album there is new music, but also older pieces that are in the repertoire for some time, but always get a new version by the improv Instant Composing approach the band! The title piece is a wonderfully messy-but-then again-not played song by cellist Tristan Honsinger, who also handles the vocals himself. On the CD also two pieces of pianist Herbie Nichols, to whom the ICP Orchestra already has dedicated a project in the past. (The underrated pianist from the time of Thelonious Monk, with an equally edgy and unconventional style). Furthermore pieces of Guus Janssen, Th. Monk, Misha Mengelberg and Charles Ives.
The Mengelberg Anatole piece was written in the 60s by Misha Mengelberg as an attempt to write a pop hit! At the time, sung by Shirley Zwerus. (The song didn’t become a hit)

Instead of Misha Mengelberg now Guus Janssen sits at the piano and in two pieces guest soloist Matthijs van de Woerd sings. In the orchestra furthermore leading figures from the Dutch improv secene as Han Bennink – drums, Ab Baars, Michael Moore, Tobias Delius – reeds, Ernst Glerum – bass, Mary Oliver – viola, Wolter Wierbos – trombone.

ICP Orchestra plays group improvisation at the highest level. “These musicians can swing like mad whenthey want to, and can play the most sensitive ballad bar at the drop of a hat. They ook compose their Own fantastic repertoire, “says trumpeter Dave Douglas. Pianist Misha Mengelberg and drummer Han Bennink founded the Instant Composers Pool in the sixties. The orchestra became a virtuoso, quirky band moving between elementary jazz and contemporary improvisation.

Because there are no pieces of this new record available on the internet, and in addition, each performance yet is different, on this page a nice older video: Steigerpijp
