UK Now! #2

Jonge Britse Jazz & Beyond

Of zoals Get The Blessing de plaat zelf samenvat: “The culmination of 4 days of recording, 3 years of gigging and 12 years of drinking tea and gin.

UK Now#2

Since early this year the Bimhuis brings a concert series with young British jazz and improv talent called UK Now! On 26 September the 2nd edition, with two bands. Get The Blessing-(who’s musicians are involved in Portishead and Radiohead), and Gogo Penguin, the British answer to innovative piano trio’ like The Bad Plus and EST. Both b ands will also be performing in Bird Rotterdam on Saturday, September 27th

Get the blessingGet The Blessing originates from the trip hop scene in Bristol and has a unique style with a mix from jazz, dub and rock. Bassist Jim Barr and drummer Clive Deamer play with the legendary band Portishead and Deamer was Radiohead’s live drummer. The front line consists of trumpeter Pete Judge and saxophonist Jake McMurchie, who have clearly listened to the wayward sound of Ornette Coleman. The band dresses uniformly in white shirt and gray suit, and in their cool ‘animated’ videos and on promotional pictures they often cover their heads, most notably with brown paper bags.

Their latest album, Antelope and Antelope, is characterized by the use of sounds they collected on the road, but mostly because it is completely improvised. Or, as the band itself declares abut the album: “The culmination of four days of recording, three years of gigging and 12 years of drinking tea and gin.”

Gogo-PenguinManchester based  Go Go Penguin can be seen as the British answer to contemporary piano trios like E.S.T. and The Bad Plus; trio’s that since the 90s have unchained themnselves from  the traditional mode. The rhythm section is not there to accompany the piano soloist: the musicians are equivalent. They also availed themselves of all kinds of music: pop, rock and electronic music, including Aphex Twin and Massive Attack. But also from the world of classical music (Debussy). This trio also knows how to do that very well. They play as a real trinity, and already received a lot of praise at high-profile gigs in London clubs such as Vortex and Ronnie Scott.
