CD The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog, Die Hochstapler

Hochstapler betekent ‘bedrieger’.

Pierre Borel – saxophone, Louis Laurain – trumpet, Antonio Borghini – double bass, Hannes Lingens -drums
Umlaut Records

CD WILD MAN CONSPIRACY, Live at the Bimhuis

Guillermo Celano – gitaar, Gerard Kleijn – trompet, keyboard, laptop; Joost Kesselaar – drums, Chris Cheek – tenorsax.

Chris Cheek werkte oa met Paul Motian, Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra,  Bill Frisell, Brian Blade, Jeff Ballard, Lee Konitz, Carla Bley, Brad Mehldau, Kurt Rosenwinkel e.v.a.

ENGLISH

Two new CD releases from two very special ensembles with extraordinary names: Wild Man Conspiracy and Die Hochstapler

CD The Quick Brown Fox Jumps About The Lazy Dog, by Die Hochstapler

Hochstapler means ‘imposter’.
So if a band is called Hochstapler, does that mean that we are dealing with scammers here? Anybodies guess….
In any case, these Hochstapler make surprising music.
The German drummer Hannes Lingens has an Italian-French-German quartet with an ensemble and a sound just like the first quartet of Ornette Coleman.
Musically speaking it’s also about free jazz & impro.

The free jazz concepts of Coleman and Anthony Braxton were the inspiration for their first two albums. On their third they now came up with music that is entirely their own.
The title of the album is: ‘The Quick Brown Fox Jumps About The Lazy Dog’, taken from an exercise to use all letters of the alphabet in one sentence. (Check!)
Four of the six songs are – in their own words – based on a collectively developed musical alphabet. The music varies from calm romance to lively free jazz to serious silence.
Pierre Borel – saxophone, Louis Laurain – trumpet, Antonio Borghini – double bass, Hannes Lingens – drums

The work of Die Hochstapler is based on ideas about language and communication.
They are not using any sheet music, but prefer to base their jargon on
rules from poetry, card games, alphabets. The four musicians all have an independent voice. Everyone is free to suggest, pretend, agree or disagree. This creates music that is constantly changing, playful and surprising, even for the musicians themselves.

Hannes Lingens is a drummer and accordionist and active in contemporary and experimental music.
He plays in the ensembles Obliq, Konzert Minimal, [ro], Die Hochstapler, among others
and musicians collective Umlaut Berlin.

CD WILD MAN CONSPIRACY, Live at the Bimhuis

Guitar, trumpet and drums is the not so common line-up of Wild Man Conspiracy. As far as repertoire is concerned, Wild Man Conspiracy also withdraws from existing conventions. Just like on the previous two albums, WMC again makes a rock sound and the pieces are a mix of jazz, rock and free improvisation. Electronic effects also leave their mark on the sound.
On the third album “Live at the Bimhuis” the trio is supplemented with tenor saxophonist Chris Cheek.
Guillermo Celano – guitar, Gerard Kleijn – trumpet, keyboard, laptop; Joost Kesselaar – drums, Chris Cheek – tenor sax
Just like the previous two this album was released on the New York label ‘Red Piano Records’. The originals are open, with plenty of room for improvisation, which the musicians eagerly use. Just like on the previous records, the music can unpredictably change to something else in one go; from calm and lyrical to heavy and rocky. There is no label to stick to this music. We could use the term ‘modern creative’ here, although that does not explain everything about what you will hear. In any case, it is jazz-from-today!

Since 1995, jazz trumpet player Gerard Kleijn has led a wide variety of private groups and has made 10 well-received cd’s as a bandleader. He is/was a.o. active with the Clazz Ensemble, Wild Man Conspiracy, Bach Reflections and the Konrad Koselleck Bigband. Gerard made four CDs with a lot of his own work and edited piano works by the French composer Erik Satie (Le Flirt de Satie-2007) for the Gerard Kleijn Group. He makes chamber jazz with J.S. Bach as inspiration with Bach Reflections. From 2007-2017 he was co-leader of the 12-member Clazz Ensemble together with saxophonist Dick de Graaf
Chris Cheek worked with Paul Motian, Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra, Bill Frisell, Brian Blade, Jeff Ballard, Lee Konitz, Carla Bley, Brad Mehldau, Kurt Rosenwinkel.
