Made in Europe

Pianist Rembrandt Frerichs en zijn trio balanceren tussen jazz, klassiek en oosterse muziek. Voor het project Made in Europe nodigt hij speciale gasten uit. Op dit moment is dat trompettist Paolo Fresu, grootheid in de Italiaanse jazz.

Rembrandt Frerichs kijkt graag verder dan het jazzspectrum breed is. Een tijdje woonde hij in Egypte waar zijn fascinatie voor de Arabische muziek groeide. Hij leerde er Arabische muziek kennen en sloot vriendschappen met musici. 
Hij put uit Europese klassieke muziek en Arabische muziek. Zijn motto: ‘One Size Fits Nobody’
.
Vorig jaar bracht hij het album‘A Long Story Short’ uit, met 12 eigen composities, waarop jazz, oosterse en westerse klassieke muziek elkaar naadloos aanvullen. 
Frerichs kent het Amerikaanse jazzrepertoire wel, maar wil graag de gebaande paden vermijden. En zo speelt hij bijvoorbeeld ook jazz en impro op de fortepiano, (voorloper van de moderne vleugel). En gebruikt hij motieven en structuren van Johann Sebastian Bach.
Frerichs kreeg van het Nationaal Muziekinstrumentenfonds de mogelijkheid een fortepiano te laten bouwen. Het instrument staat nu bij hem thuis. Zes jaar lang staat de fortepiano tot zijn beschikking.

Hij componeert veel, ook voor klassieke musici zoals violisten Liza Ferschtman en Rosanne Philippens, harpist Remy van Kesteren, het Osiris Trio, saxofonist Ties Mellema, accordeonist Frode Halti, Amstel quartet, Matangi String Quartet, Zapp string quartet, Hermine Deurloo, zangeres Klaartje van Veldhoven e.a.
In 2015-2016 heeft hij een carte blanche in Tivoli Vredenburg, Utrecht en in 2016 krijgt hij een opdracht van festival November Music om te componeren voor en spelen met het Cello Octet en de Iraanse tar speler Hossein Alizadeh.

De Italiaanse trompettist Paolo Fresu is een van de bekendste jazzmusici van Italië. 
Hij werd bekend als talent in de jaren 80. Zijn spel en stijl doen denken aan de vroege Miles Davis. Hij had zijn eigen quintet, maar speelde ook veel met het P.A.F. trio met Antonello Salis (piano, accordeon) en Furio di Castri (bas).

Daarnaast speelde hij over de hele wereld met allerlei musici: John Taylor, Uri Caine, Omar Sosa, Dhafer Youssef e.v.a. Fresu speelde in de afgelopen 30 jaar op ongeveer 300 albums, waaronder veel met igen werk, naast ECM-opnames met Carla Bley, Ralph Towner en de vocal groep A Filetta.


Hij is artistiek leider van Festival ‘Time in Jazz’ in Berchidda en leidde ook het International Festival van Bergamo.

Rembrandt Frerichs likes to stretch his view beyond the jazz spectrum. For a while he lived in Egypt where his fascination for Arabic music inceased. He met and made friends with Arabic musicians. IN his own music he draws on European classical music and Arabic music. His motto: “One Size Fits Nobody’
Last year the  album’A Long Story Short ‘ was released. 12 original compositions, in which jazz, eastern and western classical music complement each other perfectly. 
Frerichs is familiar with the American jazz repertoire, but wants to avoid the common tracks. That is why he also plays jazz and improvisation on the fortepiano (precursor of the modern grand piano). He uses motifs and structures of Johann Sebastian Bach. The National Music Fund gave Frerichs the opportunity to build a fortepiano. For six years, he has the instrument at his disposal.


He does a lot of composing too, for classical musicians such as violinists Liza Ferschtman and Rosanne Philippens, harpist Remy van Kesteren, the Osiris Trio, saxophonist Ties Mellema, accordionist Frode Halti, Amstel Quartet, Matangi String Quartet, Zapp string quartet, Hermine Deurloo, singer Klaartje van Veldhoven.
In 2015-2016 he has carte blanche at venue Tivoli Vredenburg, Utrecht. Also he received a composition assignment from November Music festival 2016 to compose for and play with the Cello Octet and the Iranian tar player Hossein Alizadeh.
