CD Diwan of Beauty & Odd,  Dhafer Youssef (Okeh records)

The power of melancholia

Diwan of Beauty & Odd Dhafer Youssef (Okeh Records)

Dhafer Youssef – singer and udspeler of Tunisian origin – is known for his incisive way of singing, his wistful melodies, his crossover between Arabic music and jazz, and his collaborations with many other musicians in Europe. In his music jazz improvisation and classical Arabic music fuse. Youssef’s music is rooted in the spiritual Sufi tradition, but he has always been open to music from other directions, such as jazz, rock and electronics. But whether he works with Arabic musicians or jazz musicians, or integrates rock, electronica and jazz elements into his music: the wistfulness of traditional sufimuziek and melancholia in his voice are always there.
Diwan Of Beauty And Odd is the title of his latst album; here he plays together with three outstanding modern jazzmusicians: Aaron Parks – piano, Ben Williams – bass Mark Giuliana – drums, Ambrose Akinmusire – trumpet (guestperformance)
These jazz musicians add a tremendous power; but then they belong to the best musicians of their generation. Definitely Mark Giuliana creates a solid groove and power in many pieces. Ambrose Akinmusire plays his trumpet subtle and restrained; Aaron Parks plays the piano lightly, Ben Williams is a solid bass player. A dream cast actually.

At high speed Dhafer Youssef conquered venues and festivals all over the world with his hypnotic voice and virtuoso playing on the ud. The press always reacted very enthusiastic. For example “His voice was unearthly flexible and stretches from east to west,” was once written in the Volkskrant.

He can sing in a very high register, but also very low!
And he’s certainly not just a singer who accompanies himself on the ud – he’s also a fully fledged instrumentalist.

Youssef got interested in jazz at an early, listening to it secretly during his training at a Koranic school. Later on he left Tunisia to start a jazz career and now lives in Europe, mostly in Paris or Vienna since 1990. He released six albums and did great work with the Sardinian trumpeter Paolo Fresu and Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset.
He has a strong interest and affinity with both Indian and Norwegian music. In 2001 he recorded the album Electric Sufi with the former Sugarhill Gang and Tackhead rhythm section of Will Calhoun and Doug Wimbish. He was guest artist on the album iNG film by Norwegian artist Bugge Wesseltoft. Furthermore, he has performed with ao Uri Caine, Tigran Hamasyan, Jon Hassell, Markus Stockhausen, Nguyên Lê, Omar Sosa and Hüsnü Senlendirici.
