Satanique Samba Trio is één van de leukste en spannendste groepen van de Braziliaanse alternatieve scene. Ze spelen géén samba en het is géén trio.
Hun opgewekte en briljante muziek is volledig gericht op de deconstructie van de populaire clichés van Braziliaanse volksmuziek. Ze zetten die op hun kop, of halen elementen uit elkaar, om er vervolgens een nieuwe eigen versie van te maken, die doet denken aan de gekte van avantgarde popmusici als Captain Beefheart en Frank Zappa. Ook doet hun muziek wel denken aan de exotische weirdness van het Braziliaanse populaire Os Mutantes in de jaren 60.
Hun cd’s zijn verkeerd genummerd, de groep heet een trio maar is eigenlijk een kwintet – soms zelfs een sextet of septet – en muzikaal gezien is het ensemble een echt excentrisch ‘enfant terrible’.
Al 15 jaar heeft Satanique Samba Trio succes met deze aanpak; ze verwierven een cultstatus en mochten als side-act touren met grote namen als Tom Zé en Naná Vasconcelos.
In de afgelopen 15 jaar verschenen albums met veelzeggende titels als Misantropicalia en Bad Trip Simulator.

Tom Zé is een van de bekende artiesten die deel uitmaakten van de Tropicalismo, de Braziliaanse artistieke beweging in muziek, theater en poëzie, die opkwam in de late jaren 60. Tropicalismo combineerde elementen uit de populaire cultuur met avantgarde en verwerkte ook invloeden uit het buitenland in de Braziliaanse tradities.
Als stijl in de muziek heeft Tropicalismo het het langst volgehouden.
In mei, juni en juli staan er zes uitdagende Braziliaanse concerten op het programma in het Bimhuis. Samba en bossanova zijn wijd en zijd bekend, maar deze concertserie duikt juist dieper in de Braziliaanse cultuur die zo veel invloedrijke zangers en musici heeft voortgebracht. De serie Sounds of Brazil bestaat uit drie vocale en drie instrumentale concerten. Bij de vocale concerten staat de rijke traditie van Braziliaanse zangeressen centraal, vooral de namen die in Nederland minder bekend zijn. Sounds of Brazil opent met Roberta Sá, die al vele hits scoorde in Brazilië en gaat verder met een intiem akoestisch concert van de geroemde singer-songwriter Ceumar, en een Roda de Samba-sessie met diverse zangeressen. Hoe divers de serie is laten de instrumentale concerten horen, met de eigenzinnige cultband Satanique Samba Trio, het spectaculaire slagwerkduo SouKast en het virtuoze Trio Corrente.

Satanique Samba Trio is one of the most catching and exciting groups of the Brazilian alternative scene. They don’t play Samba and it’s not a trio.
Their cheerful and brilliant music is fully focused on the deconstruction of the popular clichés of Brazilian folk music. They turn it upside down, or isolate elements out of it, only to make a new quirky version of their own. It brings back memories of avant-garde popmusicians like Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa. Also, their music recalls the exotic weirdness of the Brazilian popular group Os Mutantes in the 60’s.
Their CDs are numbered incorrectly, the group is called a trio but is actually a quintet – sometimes even a sextet or septet – and musically the ensemble is a true eccentric ‘enfant terrible’.
For 15 years Satanique Samba Trio has been successful in this approach; they gained a cult status and were allowed to play as supporting act with big names like Tom Zé and Naná Vasconcelos.
In the last 15 years, albums have appeared with titles like Misantropicalia and Bad Trip Simulator.

Tom Zé is one of the well-known artists who belonged to Tropicalismo, Brazilian artistic movement in music, theater and poetry, which emerged in the late 60’s. Tropicalismo combined elements of popular culture with avant-garde and also used influences from abroad in the Brazilian traditions.
Tropicalismo has lasted the longest as a style in music.
In May, June and July there are six challenging Brazilian concerts in the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. Samba and bossanova are widely known, but this series of concerts delves deeper into Brazilian culture, which has produced so many influential singers and musicians. The Sounds of Brazil series consists of three vocal and three instrumental concerts. At the vocal concerts, the rich tradition of Brazilian singers is featured, especially with artists that are less well known in the Netherlands. Sounds of Brazil opens with Roberta Sá, who has scored many hits in Brazil and continues with an intimate acoustic concert from the famous singer-songwriter Ceumar, and a Roda de Samba-session with various singers. The diversity of the series is to be heared in the instrumental concerts, with the quirky cult band Satanique Samba Trio, the spectacular hitwork duo SouKast and the virtuous Trio Corrente.
