Benjamin Herman tourt regelmatig de wereld rond, maar op dit moment is op tournee door heel Nederland vanwege de release van een nieuwe CD ‘Live” (doxrecords) met zijn kwartet.

Herman doet het al vele jaren heel erg goed bij publiek en pers.
Als saxofonist is Herman schatplichtig aan oude jazzmusici als Lou Donaldson, Jackie Byard, Thelonious Monk en Misha Mengelberg, wier werk hij serieus bestudeerd heeft. Zijn sound heeft een lekker rauw randje.
Zijn muziek reikt van traditionele tot freejazz, van jazzdance tot latin en afro, hiphop en rap. Daarmee spreekt hij dan ook een groot en divers publiek aan.
Zonder de pianist bestaat dit trio als Benjamin Herman Trio, dat vorig jaar nog de fraaie CD Café Solo uitbracht (roach records, dox 180). Een cd vol jazzstandards, die Herman zegt te hebben geleerd in zijn begintijd in café Alto in Amsterdam. Mooie ‘kale’ versies van mooie stukken.

Benjamin Herman werd geboren in Londen, en verhuisde op 8jarige leeftijd naar Nederland met het gezin, waaronder zijn tweelingbroer ( filmregisseur) Jonathan. Hij speelt altsa; C-melodysax en dwarsfluit. Hij speelde voor het eerst saxofoon toen hij twaalf jaar was. Op zijn dertiende trad hij al op in het professionele clubcircuit. Op zijn 17e voor het eerst op het North Sea Jazz Festival. Hij studeerde aan het conservatorium van Hilversum, waar hij in 1991 cum laude afstudeerde en ook aan de Manhattan School of Music in New York. In 1993 richtte hij New Cool Collective op, een achtkoppige band met invloeden uit de jazz-, soul- afrikaanse en latinmuziek. Die band bestaat nu dus al 20 jaar, reist over de hele wereld en bracht inmiddels 13 platen uit. In 2006 ontving hij de VPRO/Boy Edgarprijs. Herman speelde samen met heel veel musici, uit allerlei muzikale genres: jazz, funk, souljazz, pop, hiphop, rap zoals Jan Akkerman, Candy Dulfer, Wouter Hamel,Michiel Borstlap, Jesse van Ruller,Misha Mengelberg, Pete Philly & Perquisite, Hans Teeuwen. Hij maakte ook filmmuziek en deed mee aan theaterproducties. Hij speelde mee op meer dan 100 platen (!!)

Herman is a very well known favourite of the public and press for years now.
As a saxophonist Herman is indebted to old jazz musicians like Lou Donaldson, Jackie Byard, Thelonious Monk and Misha Mengelberg, whose work he has seriously studied. His sound is characterized by a raw edge. His music ranges from traditional to free jazz, jazz dance to latin and afro, hip hop and rap. Thus he reaches a large and diverse audience.

Without the piano the trio plays as Benjamin Herman Trio, that released the beautiful CD Cafe Solo last year (roach records, dox 180). A CD full of jazz standards, Herman says he has learned in his early years in Alto cafe in Amsterdam . Beautiful ‘ naked’ versions of beautiful pieces .
Benjamin Herman was born in London and moved to the Netherlands with his family at the age of 8, including his twin brother (film director ) Jonathan . He plays altosaxophone , C melodysax and flute .
Benjamin Herman got his first saxophone at the age of twelve. At thirteen he was already playing in the professional club circuit. Within a few years he was appearing with different groups around the world and initiating projects of his own. His fame spread beyond jazz circles in the 1990s when he formed the groundbreaking ensemble New Cool Collective. Having made a name as soloist while still a teenager, Benjamin Herman has appeared on over a hundred records with all kinds of artists, from Candy Dulfer to Misha Mengelberg. Herman has also built a career in Holland and abroad as a composer. With New Cool Collective as well as with his smaller band’s his gigs are inspired by dance floor jazz, surf and punk music, free jazz and traditional music from all over the world, attracting music fans of all genres as well as straight ahead jazz aficionados. At the same time he has explored in depth the repertoire of composers such a Byard, Monk and Mengelberg.
Today Benjamin Herman is one of the most original and productive jazz musicians in the Netherlands exploring influences beyond the confines of the jazz world. He also won his third Edison for the album ‘Campert’ (featuring Dutch poet Remco Campert). He toured around the whole world. In 2006 he received the prestigious VPRO/Boy Edgar Award.
