Miguel Rodríguez is (jong) jazzpianist, maar ook flamencopianist – een van de weinige échte. Met zijn kwintet heeft hij een eigen stijl ontwikkeld: jazz en impro meet latin en flamenco, in een persoonlijke en originele variant.
De Spaanse roots zijn in zijn muziek duidelijk terug te horen. Madrid is een multiculturele stad vol verschillende soorten muziek en dat beïnvloedt zijn composities.
Miguel Rodríguez werd geboren in Madrid en ook zijn kwintet bestaat deels uit Spaanse musici die in Nederland gevestigd zijn. De band begon als trio met contrabassist Luciano Poli en drummer Francesco de Rubeis. Daar kwamen flamencozangeres Maria Marin en percussionist Miguel Hiroshi bij. In 2013 verscheen het debuutalbum van deze groep.
Elk jaar kiezen programmeurs van de 25 beste jazz clubs van Nederland de meest veelbelovende talenten uit, die ook hun eigen muziek componeren: Young Vips. Dit jaar zijn dat saxofonist Floris van der Vlugt met Windkracht 7 (blog hierover volgende week) en pianist Miguel Rodríguez. Beide muzikanten werkten eerder al met veel grote namen samen en vanaf 8 februari a.s. touren zij door Nederland met hun eigen composities. Na zijn studie aan het Rotterdams en Amsterdams conservatorium besloot Miguel Rodríguez in Nederland te blijven. Naast zijn eigen muziek, waarmee hij afgelopen jaar onder andere te zien was in Het Concertgebouw, is Miguel Rodríguez onderdeel van het Benjamin Herman kwartet, het Ben van den Dungen kwartet en het Maarten Hogenhuis kwartet.

Every year programmers of the 25 best jazz clubs in the Netherlands pick the most promising talents, who also compose their own music: Young Vips.
