Je kunt de Amsterdam Klezmer Band op straat neerzetten, in een schouwburg of in een popzaal: gedanst en gefeest zal er worden. Met aanstekelijke energie en instrumentale virtuositeit, de weemoedige Russische teksten van zanger Alec Kopyt en raps van bandleider en saxofonist Job Chajes gaat de zaal steevast op z’n kop.
De band maakt niet alleen traditionele klezmer, maar ook Balkan Beat, rap, hiphop, ska en jazz. Inmiddels al meer dan 15 jaar – met véél succes.
Op donderdag 27 februari presenteert de AKB zijn nieuwe cd Blitzmash in Paradiso, Amsterdam. Op dit nieuwe album wordt de eigen klezmer/balkan stijl gecombineerd met percussie en elektronica. Er werd samengewerkt met producer Jori Collignon (Skip & die, Nobody beats the Drum) en gastmusici w.o. Benjamin Herman, Kyteman, zangeres Lilian Vieira (bekend van brasilectro band Zuco 103). De combinatie van joodse klezmer en braziliaanse zang is wonderlijk opwindend.
Begonnen als club van Amsterdamse straatmuzikanten uitgegroeid tot een internationaal zevenkoppig ‘klezmer-beest’. Verwacht geen traditionele klezmeravond bij hun concerten. Een joodse traditional kan makkelijk samengaan met een rap of een grommende sax solo. De meeste bandleden zijn ook actief in de jazz en improvsatiemuziek-scene (bijvoorbeeld trompettist Gijs Levelt in o.a. Spinifex). Alec Kopyt , de zanger, heeft een stem die is gedrenkt in de bitterzoete tradities van zijn geboortestad Odessa.
Toch blijven de roots zelfs te horen wanneer de muziek wordt geremixed door beroemde dj’s zoals C – Mon & Kypski of Shantel. Ze speelden op podia en festivals in heel Europa, Brazilië, Mexico en Zuid-Korea. Bandleider Job Chajes noemt AKB een “mini brass band” die bestaat uit drie blazers, percussie, bas, accordeon en een zanger met een schorre stem. ‘We hebben nog steeds geen drummer, noch gebruiken we alle elektronica.’ Alle bandleden spelen met gemak ook solo.

Chajes ontdekte zijn joodse muzikale roots als straatmuzikant in de vroege jaren negentig. 1997 was het officiële geboortejaar van de Amsterdam Klezmer Band. Begonnen als kwartet op verschillende festivals en ook op straat muziek festivals. De doorbraak kwam op het Noorderslag festival in Groningen in 2001. Toen was de AKB inmiddels de 7- koppige band het nu is . Sinds 1997 zijn er meer dan duizend optredens en elf albums geweest. De bandleden zijn geestlijke verwanten van de ‘klezmorim’: professionele joodse musici die twee eeuwen geleden door heel Europa trokken.

Mini brass band gets everybody to dance
Wether the Amsterdam Klezmer Band plays on the street, in a theater or in a pop venue: there will be dancing people. With catching energy and instrumental virtuosity , the Russian melancholic lyrics of singer Alec Kopyt and raps of band leader and saxophonist Job Chajes the audience goes crazy every single time.
The band doesn’t stick to traditional klezmer but plays Balkan Beat, rap, hip hop, ska and jazz as well. For more than 15 years now – with great success.
On Thursday, February 27th the AKB presents its new album Blitzmash in Paradiso, Amsterdam. On this new album their own klezmer/Balkan style is combined with percussion and electronics. The combination of Jewish klezmer and Brazilian singing is wonderfully exciting.
The AKB started out as a club of Amsterdam street musicians and grew out to be an international seven-headed ‘klezmer beast’. Do not expect a traditional klezmer evening at their concerts. A Jewish traditional can easily be combined with a rap or a growling sax solo. Most band members are also active in the jazz and improv music scene (like trumpetplayer Gijs Levelt in Spinifex). Alec Kopyt, the singer, has a voice that is drenched in bittersweet traditions of his native city of Odessa.
However, the roots remain to be heard even when the music is remixed by renowned DJs such as C – Mon & Kypski or Shantel. They played at venues and festivals throughout Europe, Brazil, Mexico and South Korea. Bandleader Job Chajes AKB calls it a “mini brass band” consisting of three wind instruments, percussion, bass, accordion and a singer with a hoarse voice . “We still do not have a drummer, nor do we use any electronics.” All band members can play a solo .

Chajes discovered his Jewish musical roots as a street musician in the early nineties. 1997 was the official birth of the Amsterdam Klezmer Band. Started as a quartet at various festivals and street music festivals. The breakthrough came at the Noorderslag festival in Groningen in 2001. By then the AKB was a 7-piece band. Since 1997 there have been more than a thousand performances and eleven albums .The band members are real kindred spirit of ‘Klezmorim’ : professional Jewish musicians who two centuries ago went throughout Europe.
