De term ‘trance-jazz’ wordt wel eens gebruikt voor de muziek van trio The Necks.
Een concert begint vaak met een simpel patroontje, zachtjes gespeeld door éen van de drie musici. Na een tijdje gaat de tweede musicus meedoen met een door hem bedacht figuur, daarna de derde. Heel langzaam veranderen de patronen en schuiven die over elkaar.
Het Australische trio The Necks speelt al 30 jaar samen en heeft wereldwijd een cultstatus opgebouwd met langgerekte, fascinerende improvisaties.
Officieel heette destijds wat zij speelden misschien nog wel jazz, maar in feite was het muziek die niet in een hokje te stoppen viel: meer een experimentele, hypnotiserende geluidsbelevenis. Zij waren – zeker in de improvisatiemuziek – een van de eersten die dat deden. Hun muziek heeft raakvlakken met allerlei minimalistische muziek, van Steve Reich tot ambient tot elektronische muziek.
Op 23 maart speelt het trio in het Muziekgebouw aan het IJ (onderdeel van het festival Art of the Trio i.s.m. het Bimhuis.) Chris Abrahams – piano (soms ook Hammond orgel), Lloyd Swanton – bas, Tony Buck – drums
Van The Necks bestaan geen korte video’s.
Ze spelen altijd – improviserend – een set van 50-60 minuten aan één stuk door.
Het zelfde geldt voor hun CD’s, hoewel daar wel vaker sprake is van editing en mixing. Sinds 1989 brachten ze 17 albums uit.
Een smaakmakende passage in een recensie van Nick Southall over hun laatste CD Open (in The Quietus, nov 2013): ‘It would be easy to tie yourself up in philosophical knots about this band and what they do – is it important, is it boundary pushing, is it influential, is it relevant – but none of that matters. Just put this recording on. Listen to it. Let it inhabit the same space as you. Let it influence the colour and tone of the room you are in, let it change your mood and perception. Leave the room, make a cup of tea, come back, read a book, make love, write a letter; it will have changed; it will have stayed the same.‘

A concert often starts with a simple pattern, gently played by one of the three musicians. After a while, the second musician involves with a figure invented by him, then the third. Slowly the patterns change and slide over each other.
The Australian trio The Necks has been together for 30 years and has built up a worldwide cult status with long, fascinating improvisations .
Officially it might have been called ‘jazz’ at that time what they were playing, but in fact it was music that didn’t fit into one category. It was just an experimental, hypnotic sound experience. They were – especially in improvised music – one of the first to do so. Their music touches on all sorts of minimalist music of Steve Reich to ambient to electronic music.
