Tijdens het Kick Off weekend van 40-jaar-Bimhuis maakten ze enorme indruk: de Balkan Clarinet Summit, met zes klarinettisten uit zes verschillende landen: Roemenië, Servië, Turkije, Italië, Duitsland en Griekenland. Ze koppelen een grote virtuositeit aan veel spelplezier en ze spelen alles: van jazz en folk tot klassiek, van verstild en melancholisch tot vrolijk en uitbundig.
Hun Cd Many Languages One Soul (piranha records) bevat 14 stukken, die werden opgenomen tijdens concerten in verschillende steden; een live cd dus.

De klarinet is (naast de viool) het meest populaire instrument in Zuidoost-Europa. Maar in de loop van de ongeveer 150 jaar dat de klarinet bestaat zijn van gebied tot gebied uiteenlopende speeltechnieken ontstaan. In Balkan Clarinet Summit spelen ‘lokale meesters van de klarinet’ samen met vertegenwoordigers van de internationale improvisatie-klarinet scene. Ze mengen én contrasteren de verscheidenheid van het volksmuziek-achtig instrument met de interpretatieve cultuur van zowel klassieke als jazz tradities.
Alle musici brachten 2 tot 4 traditionele stukken of hun eigen composities in. Steffen en Claudio maakten vervolgens de arrangementen.
Steffen Schorn is een riet-instrument specialist. Hij bespeelt àlle saxofoons en clarinetten, van heel klein en hoog tot aan heel groot en laag. Met Claudio Puntin vormt hij een kleurrijk duo. Ze speelden samen nog bij de Braziliaan Hermeto Pascoal.
Een bekende groep van hem is Universe of Possibilities
Ook is hij lid van de Kölner Saxophon Mafia. Hij speelde met velen, w.o. George Gruntz Concert Band, Don Cherry, Michael Brecker, Ray Anderson en Nils Wogram. Hij is professor aan en directeur van de jazz-afdeling van Neurenberg Musikhochschule en dirigent van het Noorse Wind Ensemble.
Claudio Puntin’s warme en flexibele klarinetgeluid is te horen op de soundtrack van vele films, theaterstukken en hoorspelen. Hij doorkruist moeiteloos ambient, elektronische en melodische muzikale vormen en behoort tot de meest creatieve improvisatoren van dit moment. We vinden hem ook in ensembles van en met Wolfert Brederode en ook Martin Fondse.
Slobodan Trkulja – afkomstig uit Novi Sad in Servië – is een virtuoze multi-instrumentalist en zanger. Hij speelt niet alleen klarinet, maar ook verschillende fluiten, drums, sax, gitaar en drums. Hij populariseerde traditionele Balkanmuziek met een moderne aanpak. Van 1997-2008 woonde hij in Nederland. Deze compositie – hier uitgevoerd samen met het Metropole Orkest – staat ook op het repertoire van de BCS.
Sergiu Balutel werd geboren in Moldavië. Hij is een klassieke Roemeense volksmuzikant en meester van het staccato spelen. Zijn aanstekelijk licht ritmische frasering is bijvoorbeeld te horen in Geamparale”( ook op de cd van BCS)
Klarino speler Stavros Pazarentsis stamt uit een familie van volskmuzikanten en heeft een speelstijl die doordrenkt is van Griekse Klarino tradities. Zijn geluid is melacholisch en zijn taksims (improvisaties) zijn poëtische solo-momenten. Hij werkt als studiomusicus en runt een live muziek bar in Naoussa.
Oguz Büyükberber (basclarinet) werd geboren in Istanbul en woont in Amsterdam. Hij is aktief in de hedendaagse jazz en improv scene in Europa en doet ook veel met electronica.

Orlin Pamukov vertegenwoordigt de Bulgaarse stijl van spelen, die met articulatie en listige ritmes een van de meest gecompliceerde vormen is van Europese volksmuziek.

The clarinet (besides the violin) is the most popular instrument in Southeastern Europe. But in the course of the150 years the clarinet exists diverse playing techniques emerged from area to area. In Balkan Clarinet Summit ‘local masters of the clarinet’ play together with representatives of the international clarinet improvisation scene. They blend and contrast the variety of the folk-instrument with the interpretative culture of both classical and jazz traditions.
All the musicians provided 2 to 4 traditional pieces or own compositions. Steffen and Claudio then made the arrangements.
Steffen Schorn is a reed instrument specialist. He plays all saxophones and clarinets, from very small & high pithced to very large and low. With Claudio Puntin he forms a colorful duo. Both of them played with the Brazilian Hermeto Pascoal. One of Schorn’s ensembles is Universe of Possibilities; he is also a member of the Kölner Saxophon Mafia. He played with many, ao George Gruntz Concert Band, Don Cherry, Michael Brecker, Ray Anderson and Nils Wogram. He is a professor and director of the jazz department at Nuremberg Musikhochschule and conductor of the Norwegian Wind Ensemble.
Claudio Puntin’s warm and flexible clarinet sound can be heard on the soundtrack of many films, plays and radio plays. He traverses effortlessly ambient, electronic and melodic musical forms and is one of the most creative improvisers of his time. We also find him in ensembles with Wolfert Brederode and Martin Fondse.
Slobodan Trkulja – originating from Novi Sad in Serbia – is a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist and singer. He not only plays clarinet, but also different flutes, drums, sax, guitar and drums. He popularized traditional Balkan music with a modern approach. From 1997-2008 he lived in the Netherlands. This composition – here performed with the Metropole Orchestra – is also on the repertoire of the BCS.
Sergiu Balutel was born in Moldova. He is a classic Romanian folk musician and master of playing staccato. His contagious light rhythmic phrasing, for example heard in Geamparale “(also on the CD BCS)
Klarino player Stavros Pazarentsis comes from a family of folkmusicians and has a playing style that is steeped in Greek Klarino traditions. His sound is melancholic and his taksims (improvisations) are poetic solo moments. He works as a studio musician and runs a live music bar in Naoussa.
Oguz Büyükberber (bass clarinet) was born in Istanbul and lives in Amsterdam. He is active in the contemporary jazz and improv scene in Europe and also works a lot with electronics.
Orlin Pamukov represents the Bulgarian style of playing; with its articulation and tricky rhythms one of the most complicated forms of European folk music.
