Altsaxofonist, klarinettist en componist Michael Moore wordt internationaal geroemd om zijn prachtige toon en rijke muzikale fantasie. De in Californië geboren rietblazer combineert het beste van verschillende werelden: de finesse van de Amerikaanse jazztraditie, de anarchie van de New Dutch Swing en de eigenzinnigheid van volksmuziek uit alle windstreken.
Moore wordt deze maand 60 en viert dit met een achtkoppige band: het Michael Moore Bigtet. Nieuwe en oudere composities uit zijn oeuvre worden gespeeld, soms ingetogen, soms uitbundig. Zowel jonge als gevestigde musici uit de Amsterdamse jazz- en impro-scene spelen in dit bigtet. Pianiste Kaja Draksler, baritonsaxofonist Giuseppe Doronzo en gitarist Jorrit Westerhof zijn van de jongere garde. Kornettist Eric Boeren, trombonist Wolter Wierbos en slagwerker Michael Vatcher komen uit Available Jelly, de band waarin Moore al sinds eind jaren ’70 actief is. Arjen Gorter (Breuker Kollektief) is de ijzersterke eminence grise op bas.

Michael Moore geeft overigens op 20 november ook een clinic op sax14 (Internationaal saxofoon festival in Muziekgebouw aan het IJ en Bimhuis van 20 t/m 23 november. Adolphe Sax werd 200 jaar geleden geboren!)
In de clinic deelt hij zijn ervaringen en legt uit hoe je tot een eigen stijl binnen de jazz kunt komen.

Michael Moore heeft veel verstand van zowel de Amerikaanse jazz als de Nederlandse geïmproviseerde muziek, maar zijn schrijven en spelen worden ook beïnvloed door muziek uit andere culturen. Hij speelde Turkse muziek (oa met Oguz Büyükberber), Malinese met Toumani Diabate, Keletigui Diabate en Habib Koité, Portugese met Fernando Lameirinhas en Cristina Branco, en Braziliaanse met oa Rogerio Bicudo. Ook uit muziek van Sicilië, Madagaskar, Istrië en Indonesië haalt hij inspiratie. Hij heeft samengewerkt met en is beïnvloed door dichters en poëzie, dansers en andere beeldende kunstenaars.
Hij speelde/speelt met zijn eigen ‘Fragile’ Quartet, Michael Moore Quintet, Jewels & Binoculars – spelen de muziek van Bob Dylan, ICP Orchestra, All Ellington; Available Jelly; Trio Clusone, Magpie dans en muziekgroep,  Achim Kaufmann Trio, Benoit Delbecq en de Paul Berner band.


Michael Moore komt oorspronkelijk uit Californië, USA.
Hij verhuisde naar Boston om te studeren bij oa Jaki Byard, George Russell en Joe Maneri aan het New England Conservatory of Music, studeerde af in 1977. Na 1 jaar in New York reisde hij in 1978 naar Europa om te spelen met Available Jelly, de muzikale begeleidingsband van de Great Salt Lake Mime Troupe. Sinds 1982 woont hij in Amsterdam.


In de vroege jaren ’80 werkte hij vaak met theatergezelschappen (oa Baal, Dogtroep, Teo Joling, Mug met de Gouden Tand) en dans (oa met Pauline De Groot, Katie Duck, Shusaku Takeuchi). 
Hij speelde toen ook in het Guus Janssen Septet en Maarten Altena Kwartet en Octet. En later met  groepen van Mark Helias, Gerry Hemingway, Sean Bergin, Simon Nabatov, Dave Douglas, Myra Melford, Mark Dresser en anderen.

In 1986 ontving hij de Boy Edgar Prijs. In 2000-2002 werd Moore verkozen tot # 1 klarinettist in (Talent Deserving Wider Recognition) Down Beat Critics Poll en ook kreeg hij in 2000 de Bird Award van het Northsea Jazz Festival.
Hij richtte een eigen platenlabel op, Ramboy. Zijn spel en composities zijn op meer dan 80 cd’s om te horen.

Alto sax and clarinet player Michael Moore is renowned internationally for his beautiful tone and his rich musical imagination. The California-born reeds player combines the best of different worlds: the finesse of the American jazz tradition, the anarchy of New Dutch Swing and the interesting sounds of folk music from all over the globe.

Moore will reach the age of 60 this month and he will celebrate this at the Bimhuis with a great eight-piece band. New and older compositions of his oeuvre awill be played, sometimes calmly, sometimes exuberant. Both young and established musicians from the Amsterdam jazz and improv scene play in this bigtet. Pianist Kaja Draksler, baritone saxophonist and guitarist Giuseppe Doronzo Jorrit Westerhof of the younger generation. Cornetist Eric Boeren, trombonist Wolter Wierbos and percussionist Michael Vatcher from Available Jelly, the band in which Moore has been active since the late 70s. Arjen Gorter (Breuker Collective) is the strong eminence grise on bass.

Michael Moore has a deep understanding of both the American jazz and the Dutch improvised music traditions, but his writing and playing are also influenced by music from other cultures. He has played Turkish music (ao with Ogüz Büyükberber), Malinese with Toumani Diabate, Keletigui Diabate and Habib Koite, Portuguese with Fernando Lameirinhas and Cristina Branco, and Brazilian with ao Rogerio Bicudo. The music of Sicily, Madagascar, Istria and Indonesia have also been particularly influential. He has collaborated with and been influenced by poets and poetry, dancers and other visual artists.
His more recent activities include performances with his ‘Fragile’ Quartet, Michael Moore Quintet, Jewels & Binoculars – play the music of Bob Dylan, Misha Mengelberg’s Instant Composers Pool Orchestra, the Magpie dance and music performance group, the Achim Kaufmann Trio, Benoit Delbecq, Oskar Aichinger (music of Carla Bley and Annette Peacock) and the Paul Berner band.

After a year in New York City he travelled to Europe for the first time in the summer of 1978 to play with Available Jelly, the musical accompaniment to the Great Salt Lake Mime Troupe. Since 1982 he has made his home in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
The early ’80’s found him working in the theater (ao Baal, Dogtroep, Teo Joling, Mug met de Gouden Tand) and dance (ao with Pauline De Groot, Katie Duck, Shusaku Takeuchi) as well as various musical contexts such as ao Guus Janssen’s Septet and Maarten Altena’s Quartet and Octet.
