CD Nature (nwog records) van trio Nostalgia
Ik schreef al eerder een blog over hem: de duitse trombonist Nils Wogram (1972) is zo’n musicus waar je jaloers op kunt zijn. Hij kan àlles spelen op zijn trombone; beheerst alle stijlen; componeert complexe muziek (jazz maar ook hedendaags gecomponeerd) en leidt verschillende ensembles. In april komt het nieuwe album Nature uit van trio Nostalgia.

In de afgelopen jaren heeft Nils Wogram veel abstract en complex werk geschreven en uitgevoerd. Hij kreeg behoefte om wat meer ‘down to earth’ muziek te maken. De vorige CD van Nostalgia was rock-georiënteerd, soms funky, met veel gearrangeerde en veeleisende stukken. Dit keer werd het acoustischer, opener, lichter, rustiger, eenvoudiger (hoewel er toch ook een paar snellere stukken op staan).
Er is alle ruimte voor de drie musici om heel mooi te mengen. Geluid en ritme smelten samen, de balans is perfekt.
Het idee achter Nostalgia is om traditionele- en moderne jazzbeginselen te verbinden met de traditie van de Duitse Romantiek. Daar komt bij dat Wogram graag in de natuur is en dat belangrijk vindt voor zijn emotionele wereld. Hij liet zich voor dit album inspireren door de natuur en natuurtaferelen. Meer dan voorheen, hoor je daardoor pathos op het album Nature.
“Bij jazz gaat het er vaak om wie het beste kan spelen en wie de hipste ideeën heeft,” zegt Wogram. “Ik wilde een album maken zonder dat gedoe, simpelweg omdat ik daar zin in had. Dat neemt niet weg dat ik later wellicht wel weer meer complexe dingen ideeën zal oppakken. Maar voor nu is dit precies wat ik wilde uiten.”

Wogram speelt en componeert in alle stijlen, met een voorkeur voor hedendaags gestructureerd. In Nostalgia werd/wordt trouwens ook met overtuiging gefunkt. Arno Krijger speelt de baslijnen met zijn voetpedalen en drummer Dejan Terzic zorgt voor daadkrachtige jazz – en funkritmes.
Nils Wogram wordt gezien als een van de meest toonaangevende moderne jazz musici van Europa. Hij speelt verder o.a. met zijn eigen septet; Root 70; Vertigo Trombone Quartet; NDR Big Band.
In 2013 won hij de belangrijkste Duitse Jazz Award, de Albert Mangelsdorff Prijs. (Mangelsdorff was een duitse trombonist, oa bekend door zijn meerstemmig spel, waarbij hij gelijktijdig een toon blies en in de trombone zong.)

Diep geworteld in de jazz geschiedenis, weet hij traditie en innovatie combineren en de vele facetten van jazz en een modern geluid te geven. I wrote a blog about him before; the German trombonist Nils Wogram (1972) is a musician you’d envy very much. He can play anything on his trombone; masteres all styles; composes complex music (jazz but also contemporary composed) and leads several ensembles.

The previous CD Nostalgia was rock-oriented, sometimes funky, with many arranged and demanding pieces. This time it is more acoustic, open, lighter, calmer, simpler (although there are also a few faster parts on it). There is plenty of room for the three musicians to mix quite beautifly. Sound and rhythm merge, the balance is perfect.
The idea behind Nostalgia is to connect traditional and modern jazz ideas with the tradition of German Romanticism. Moreover Wogram loves to be in nature and finds it important for his emotional world. He drew inspiration for this album by nature and nature scenes. So, more than ever, you hear pathos on the album Nature.
“In jazz it often comes down to who can play best and who has the coolest ideas,” says Wogram. “I wanted to make an album without fuss, simply because I felt like it. That does not mean that I might come back later with more complex things. But for now this is exactly what I wanted to express. “
Wogram plays and composes in all styles, with a preference for modern composed and structured. Nostalgia is / was indeed convincingly funky. Arno Krijger plays the bass lines with his foot pedals and drummer Dejan Terzic creates energetic jazz – and funk rhythms.
Nils Wogram is seen as one of the leading modern jazz musicians in Europe. He plays ao with his own septet; Root 70; Vertigo Trombone Quartet; NDR Big Band.
In 2013 he won the most important German Jazz Award, the Albert Mangelsdorff Prize. (Mangelsdorff was a German trombonist, mainly known by its polyphonic playing; he simultaneously played and sang in the trombone.)
