Saxofonist Brandford Marsalis speelde 12 jaar geleden met zijn kwartet de beroemde jazzsuite A Love Supreme van John Coltrane in het Bimhuis in Amsterdam. Die uitvoering bracht hij later uit op zijn eigen label, en nu is die opnieuw uitgebracht ter gelegenheid van de 50e verjaardag van het legendarische album van Coltrane.
Er wordt intens gespeeld; de suite heeft niets aan kracht ingeboet in die 50 jaar – integendeel!

De uitgave bevat een DVD en een CD en als bonus op de live uitvoering is er een discussie tussen de vier bandleden en collega saxofonisten Michael Brecker, Ned Goold, David Sánchez en Miguel Zenón, over de inspiratie en de uitdagingen die de composities van Coltrane bieden. Bovendien zien we Alice Coltrane, John Coltrane’s weduwe en de pianist van zijn laatste band, in een 30 minuten durend gesprek met Branford Marsalis, aan het einde van de DVD.

Een nieuw trio van de duitse pianist Jürgen Friedrich met David Helm – bass, Fabian Arends – drums
Jazz op het snijvlak van hedendaags gecomponeerd. Mooie, soms abstracte muziek, waarin zo nu en dan ritmische verschuivingen of tempoveranderingen worden toegepast.
Jürgen Friedrich is pianist en componist in jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek, maar ook in hedendaags gecomponeerde muziek. In die zin is hij verwant aan trombonist Nils Wogram, die ook in beide werelden thuis is. Ze hebben ook samengewerkt, en geen wonder daarom, dat het album van dit trio werd uitgebracht op het label van Wogram: nWog Records.
Friedrich speelt in verschillende groepen en heeft ook nog een ander trio met bassist John Hébert en drummer Tony Moreno, waarmee hij verschillende albums uitbracht. Onder andere ‘Pollock’, gebaseerd op het werk van de Amerikaanse kunstenaar Jackson Pollock.
Hij studeerde piano bij oa John Taylor; zijn 1e plaat was er een met kwartet plus Kenny Wheeler. Hij is ook aktief als componist (en dirigent) en schreef oa ‘Monosuite’, een negendelig werk voor vier improvisatoren en het Sequenza Strijkorkest. Hij kreeg verschillende prijzen, waaronder – als eerste Europeaan – in 1997 de Gil Evans Award voor Jazz Compositie.

Lyrische kamerjazz
Pianist Rogier Telderman timmert aan de weg! Zijn trio-album Contours is goed ontvangen, ook internationaal en hij speelde dit voorjaar op verschillende Nederlandse podia en op jazzbeurs Jazzahead in Bremen.
De muziek op het album valt in de categorie lyrische jazz; filmisch, eigentijds, en melodieus.
Het spel is lyrisch, verzorgd en energiek; de composities veelzijdig. Inspiratie komt uit de jazz (Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett en Esbjörn Svensson), maar Telderman haalt ook ideeën uit minimal music, pop- en klassieke muziek.

VPRO’s Vrije Geluiden zal het concert in Paradox Tilburg uitzenden op zaterdag 2 en zondag 3 mei op Radio 6.
Zelf zegt hij erover: “Mijn muziek moet logisch klinken, niet bedacht voor musici onderling. Op Contours staan nu negen liedjes met een sterke melodie, van waaruit wordt geïmproviseerd. Ik wil stukken componeren die ik echt kan volgen. Misschien zitten er wel eens popinvloeden in. Maar ook romantisch classicisme à la Brahms of muziek van de Franse impressionisten. Ook voel ik me verwant met IJslandse en Noorse singer-songwriters en met producers die de mafste beats produceren.”
Behalve met dit trio speelt Rogier Telderman ook oa in een duo met vibrafonist Vincent Houdijk, Melphi (vocal soul) en hedendaags muziekensemble TEMKO (“minimal improvised chamber metal’)

Saxophonist Brandford Marsalis played the famous jazz suite A Love Supreme by John Coltrane at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam 12 years ago with his quartet. The recordings were released on his own label, and now this is being released again for the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the legendary Coltrane album. The playing is intense; the suite has not lost any power in those 50 years – on the contrary!

The edition contains a DVD and a CD and as a bonus on the live performance there is a debate between the four band members and fellow saxophonists Michael Brecker, Ned Goold, David Sánchez and Miguel Zenón, about the inspiration and the challenges presented by the Coltrane compositions. Moreover, we see Alice Coltrane, John Coltrane’s widow and the pianist of his last band, in a 30-minute conversation with Branford Marsalis, at the end of the DVD.

A new trio of German pianist Jürgen Friedrich David Helm – bass, Fabian Arends – drums
Jazz on the cutting edge of contemporary composed. Beautiful, sometimes abstract music, in which occasionally rhythmic shifts of tempo changes are applied.
Jürgen Friedrich is a pianist and composer in jazz and improvised music, but also in contemporary music. In that sense, he is relsated to trombonist Nils Wogram, who also is at home in both worlds. They have collaborated as well, and so no wonder, therefore, that the album of this trio was released on the label of Wogram: nWog Records.
Friedrich plays in various groups and also has another trio with bassist John Hébert and drummer Tony Moreno, with which he released several albums. Including “Pollock,” based on the work of American artist Jackson Pollock.
He studied piano with the likes of John Taylor; his 1st album was a quartet recording with Kenny Wheeler. He is also active as a composer (and conductor) and wrote “Mono Suite,” a nine-piece work for four improvisers and Sequenza String Orchestra. Lyrical chamber jazz
Pianist Roger Telderman is booming! His trio album Contours has been well received internationally and this spring he played at several Dutch venues and jazz fair Jazzahead Bremen.
The music on the album falls into the category of lyrical jazz; cinematic, contemporary, and melodious. The playing is lyrical, elegant and energetic; the compositions are versatile. Inspiration comes from jazz (Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett and Esbjörn Svensson) but Telderman also get ideas from minimal music, pop and classical music.

As Telderman puts it: “My music should sound natural, not contrived for musicians themselves. On the album Contours are now nine songs with a strong melody, that serve as a starting point for improvisations. I want to compose pieces that I really can understand. Sometimes pop influences will come up. But also romantic classicism à la Brahms or music of the French Impressionists. Also I feel related to Icelandic and Norwegian singer-songwriters and producers who produce the craziest beats. “
