Arifa

Beeldschone wereldjazz

‘Prachtige muzikale alchemie’ (het Parool); ‘Ragfijne schoonheid’ (Volkskrant); ‘This is music that can make you shiver with delight’ (Songlines).

Alex Simu (Roemenië) – Clarinetten & Live Laptop; Michalis Cholevas (Griekenland) – Tarhu, Ney; Franz von Chossy (Duitsland) – Piano; Sjahin During (Turkije/Nederland) – Afro-Anatolische Percussie.
15-5 Bimhuis Amsterdam; 24-5 Handelsbeurs, Gent; 30-5 Blue Clarinet Festival Amsterdam.

Meng Xiaoxu – erhu & vocals (China), Niusha Barimani – kamanche & vocals (Iran), Vanya Valkova – gadulka & vocals (Bulgaria)

Special praise for subdued instrumental world music that balances between improvisation and composition.
Arifa combines the musical heritage of Babylon, Istanbul, Bucharest and Amsterdam with subtle electronica and contemporary improvisation. They successfully shed new light on ancient music from the Middle East and the Balkan.
arifaThe four musicians understand each very well despite their different backgrounds,. They leave space for each other. The result is beautiful, balanced world jazz.
The group is based in Amsterdam, but the members have Turkish, Greek, Romanian, German and Dutch roots. Alex Simu (Romania) – Clarinets & Live Laptop; Michalis Cholevas (Greece) – Tarhu, Ney; Franz von Chossy (Germany) – Piano; Sjahin During (Turkey / Netherlands) – African-Anatolian Percussion.
15-5 Bimhuis Amsterdam; 24-5 Trade, Ghent; 30-5 Blue Clarinet Festival Amsterdam.

The repertoire consists entirely of their own compositions, predominantly performed acoustically. Purism is alien to them because in addition to piano, ud, clarinet, saxophone and percussion there are some subtle electronics as well.
Arifa’s talent for innovation-by tradition did not go unnoticed. They have been playing at leading festivals such as Womex (Denmark), Havana Jazz Festival (Cuba), Akbank Jazz Festival (Turkey), Ollin Kan Festival (Mexico), Cairo Jazz Festival (Egypt). They also worked together with several singers such as Lilian Vieira en Izaline Calister.

In 2014 Arifa did a special project Voices from The East, with three female vocalists / instrumentalists, coming from three different cultures. All three play a traditional stringed instrument (erhu, kamache and gadulka from China, Iran and Bulgaria). Singing the vocal traditions from the three countries they complemented the instrumental timbre of Arifa. Recently a CD of this project has been released. Mix Xiaoxu – Erhu & vocals (China), NIUSHA Barimani – Kamanche & vocals (Iran), Vanya Valkova – gadulka & vocals (Bulgaria)
