Minimalistisch, uitgerekt, kaal, subtiel
CD Aleatoric Inspiration (Nurnichtnur) van Florian Wittenburg.
Muziek waarbij bewust gebruik wordt gemaakt van toeval en onberekenbare factoren: aleatorische muziek.
De duitse pianist/componist Florian Wittenburg bracht dit voorjaar zijn 4e Cd Aleatoric Inspiration (2015) uit op het experimentele duitse sound art label Nurnichtnur.
Wittenburg is een multidisciplinair kunstenaar. Hij componeert vanuit speciale theorieën en processen. Op dit album staan stukken waarbij bewust gebruik wordt gemaakt van toeval en onberekenbare factoren: aleatorische muziek. De door toeval gegenereerde noten en frases heeft hij soms bewerkt of aangevuld met zelfbedachte motieven. En zo is de muziek is een combinatie van toeval en systeem.
Maar hoe klinkt die? Minimalistisch, uitgerekt, kaal, subtiel van dynamiek.

Wittenburg is daar al langer mee bezig.
Op zijn eerste plaat was de solo cd Artefacts (2011) experimenteerde Wittenburg met de door componist Stephan Froleyks ontworpen Messertisch (‘messentafel’), een elektronisch instrument. Hij creerde hier voornamelijk klankvelden, dromerig, filmmuziek-achtig, kabbelend. Het stuk Nuageux IV werd gebruikt in een dansvoorstelling van choreograaf Sharmini Tharmaratnam
Op zijn 2e cd ‘Sympathetic, (a)symetric – new music for piano’ ook weer klanklandschappen, ambientachtige stukken met drones, liggende accoorden en minimale verschuivingen. Stilstaande muziek af en toe. Een hommage aan de Amerikaanse componist Morton Feldman, die ook zoveel stilstaande ‘ambient’ muziek schreef.
Zijn 3e CD 17 Clips (2014) was deels een hommage aan de koning van de minimal music Steve Reich. Wittenburg paste een techniek van Reichs toe: phasing, waarbij twee of meerdere motieven geleidelijk uit elkaar lopen waardoor er ritmische patronen ontstaan die constant verschuiven.
Florian Wittenburg is bekend om zijn multimediale optredens, o.a. met Clang! Collective. Hij heeft muziektechnologie en instrumentele performance gestudeerd aan de Utrecht School of Arts en aan het Centre de Création Musicale lannis Xenakis (CCMIX) in Parijs. Hij werkte ook als websdesigner/vormgever aan het Max-Planck-Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen. Zijn werken waren o.a. te zien bij ZKM Karlsruhe, het Nobel Museum Stockholf en het Museum for Technology and Emerging Science Tokyo.
In onderstaande video een concert van de Nijmeegse pianist Sebastiaan Oosthout in Museum Kurhaus te Kleef (het voormalige Joseph Beuys atelier). Hij speelt Satie, Feldman, Cage, maar ook Wittenburgs muziek (vanaf 23:34). Stukken uit 2013 die deel uitmaken van zijn ‘Quotes-cyklus’. Daarvoor vroeg Wittenburg vrienden om hem hun favoriete quote/citaat te sturen, door hen zelf ingesproken. De melodie en het ritme van die gesproken taal vormde dan het uitgangspunt voor deze piano-stukken.

Music which consciously uses random and unpredictable factors: aleatoric music.
The German pianist / composer Florian Wittenburg released his 4th CD Aleatoric Inspiration (2015) on the German experimental sound art label Nurnichtnur.
Wittenburg is a multidisciplinary artist. He composes from special theories and processes. On this album conscious use is being made of random and unpredictable factors: aleatoric music. Random generated notes and phrases are edited or supplemented with motifs of his own. And so the music is a combination of chance and system.
But how does it sound? Minimalist, stretched, bare, with subtle dynamics.
Wittenburg has been working like this for some time.
On his first solo record Artefacts (2011) Wittenburg experimented with the Messer Tisch (knives-table) designed by composer Stephan Froleyks, an electronic instrument. Here he created mainly soundscapes, dreamy, cinematic, murmuring. The piece Nuageux IV was used in a dance performance of choreographer Sharmini Tharmaratnam

On his 2nd album ‘Sympathetic, (a) symetric – new music for piano’ again there are soundscapes, ambient pieces with drones, static chords and minimal shifts. Music that doesn’t move much. A tribute to the American composer Morton Feldman, who also wrote a lot of stationary ‘ambient’ music.
His 3rd CD 17 Clips (2014) was partly a homage to the king of minimal music Steve Reich. Wittenburg applied a Reich-technique: phasing, whereby two or more motifs gradually diverge, causing rhythmic patterns that shift constantly.
